I always thought it was easy access. Remove the air filter Boy and you should have it out in a few minutes.

I'm in the USA so I've heard the air pump is in the way and needs to come out too?

Yes, you must remove air pump too (and the belt that drives it)

If you have the air pump, it will be in the way, and even if you could somehow get the alt out with it there, it will be far easier with it removed. The adjuster and belt has to be under from under the car, then the alt lifts out upwards.

I usually remove more than needed, we Aussies are a special lot.

My way the first time:

Air cleaner cover and backing off.
Air pump off, in the bin, was not going back.
RH radiator hose off.
Fender cover installed, then leaned over the RH fender, and simply reached down and undid the lot from the top.
Lifted out, and all in 40 minutes that first time.

Bear in mind I am physically challenged, and getting all the way don to get under the car is a major task at best, so I work the other way where possible.

Now, with no air pump, thermo fans, 10 minutes tops, to have it out.

Honestly the worst part is the stupid flat-by-flat work on the tensioner.

I recall fiddling with a bracket bolted to the engine block, maybe that was the air pump bracket? And then I think a bolt on the alternator or air pump required an extension where you have a ratchet near the air cleaner to clear (remove filter box).

A couple of tedious things but its not that big of a deal. Clean the connections while you are there!

Thats good to hear it doesn't take that long... course I'm from the luck of, oh there's 3 bolts... 1 of them is rusted and getting stripped. Turns your whole day into an event. Ha

Ok so I've almost got the alternator out. Really not bad even with the stupid air pump having to come out. Question.. I already eliminated my air rail so I'm thinking just keep the air pump out... but what belt would I need??

Ahh screw it, I just tossed it all back in. Was really quite easy. The worst part of the whole thing is those awful belt tensioners! I hate them! All back together and hurray it works!
14.3v at idle. Car sounded stronger right away and the headlights and dash etc were all brighter. Phew
