Hi Baxtor.
You may be right in that some mods may be acceptable. I didn't want to push my luck & risk an infringement. PLus I'd already spent nearly $200 on a new fan so it was cheaper to get another clutch rather than starting again from scratch.
As luck had it, on the weekend I managed to pick up a brand new Dayco clutch from a seller on Gumtree for a fraction of the price that Sovereign quoted me. Took me lots of time, skinned knuckles and swearing to get the thing in place but its back together, ready to refill the cooling system (just had a full rebuild). So for now, all good.

There is a long dissertation in "The Book" available in the first sticky of this forum on the various stock and aftermarket fan clutches vs yellow or black fans. Look between pages 214 and 217. Various solutions are discussed there.

As promised.

The Dayco hub is Part # 115765.

It is listed for the S3 XJ6, as we guessed.

Its dimensions direct from the Dayco spec sheet are.

Total diam = 185mm
Total depth, as in hub lange to the outer face of the alloy = 66mm.
Fan bolt holes, centre to centre = 82.5mm

I have heard of some Jags, and I do forget 6 or 12, with the early Commodore clutches fitted. That was a LONG time ago, and Commodore clutches were a 1/4 the $$ of the Jag clutch.

They worked sort of OK, and did what the average owner in the day wanted.

I also agree with the "sensible alterations" here in SA. Like the MK5 guys able to fit the Toyota transmission, inlieu of the MK5 trans, due to parts being NLA.

My 3.4ltr S Type had the BW66 trans in place of the BW DG, and it was Air Conditioned, and Power steered with a Hyundai rack and BMW pump, and an alternator replaced the generator, and still deemed OK for Historic. A loooong time ago, bit still OK.

Hi Grant
I had a spot of good luck among all the setbacks I've had rebuilding the cooling system. I came across a seller on Gumtree that had just listed a new Dayco 115765. I snapped it up for a fraction of what Sovereign quoted me, so that was a lucky find. After much swearing and skinned knuckles, it is now back together ready to refill.

My car might have been fitted with a Commodore clutch. That would explain why it wasn't compatible with the new fan.

I wish the SA government would relax the rules on allowable mods. Modern components that make an old car safer or more reliable should be allowed. Pity they are so restrictive.

Thanks for your assistance.
