Been on the lookout for a black car with low miles and this one fits the bill.

It's got the newer seats but has the dreaded automatic seatbelts for that year. I believe it should have the notorious ABS as well. It does not have the piped seats that the 91 has, but then it does not have the absurd looking air bag steering wheel either.

The last "pristine" XJ12 I bought on eBay is currently a work in progress and not quite as represented by the seller. So I've been trying to call and text the seller into doing a PPI, but he keeps saying he's busy. I've located Jaguar Doctor in Boca Raton close by to him and tried to arrange a PPI, but seller won't commit to more than vague generalities. He's also changed his eBay userid multiple times, he said it was because new users get free listings.

Anyway, any observations or comments? Engine looks like it's been neglected, and seller claims recent service but cannot/will not furnish records.

Cash ready buyer, and an evasive seller that's been trying to repeatedly sell this niche car - what am I missing here? Sigh, I suppose I've answered my own question

The cosmetics look very strong, at least in the pics. That's a huge 'plus'. Mechanical problems can typically be sorted out bit by bit and for much less money (assuming DIY) than paint/body/leather/chrome

You would think that someone who has been trying to sell
a car for a while would be cooperative about a ppi ...
unless a ppi makes him nervous it won't pass muster.

Do not be fooled by the 100 percent feedback rating.

He got it by buying three $0.99 cent items.

I noticed that listing, beautiful car, love the black on black. It certainly looks the part. I'm not in the market but have a habit of watching ebay, hemmings and craigslist. During one of the previous listings it got up to $8,599 on 32 bids. Although there does seem to be a ton of deception on ebay. Lots of late bids on these type of cars for big money from buyers with a zero or minimal rating. Then you see the same car listed again the next week.

With his reluctance to facilitate a ppi and the story about why he has low user rating I'd be hesitant to tempt ebay fate again and pay that much sight unseen. Perhaps make a post in the Lower Atlantic section to see if someone in the area could go check it out for you.

It seems like many seemingly sorted, nice looking XJSs are going for under $5k, and it's the rare '96 6.0V12 that gets over $10k.

Has he told you what the reserve is or how much he'll take for it?

Notice also that it's been sitting since 2008, less than 1000 miles. Red flag for me. Was anything done to refresh it when taken out of storage?

1. No inspection? Nope, not for that kind of money!!!

2. I can understand not willing to reveal the reserve. I would not either.

Most E Bay deals are on the up and up. It is consumer oriented. At times unfair to a vendor... But, some shady guys/gals duck in and out.

Caveat Emptor, by all means.

A black on black XJS attracts a lot of "fish".

Thanks for the validation gentlemen, it reaffirms my thought process.

Seller had told me he bought it from an estate sale and his previous usernames had multiple cars, so he's some kind of a used car dealer/dabbler (licensed or not). I would think someone like that would want their good ratings over a free listing. I did notice the cheap purchases to get some feedback and then list.

The carfax shows the car has been sitting, he claims it's been serviced, but won't furnish proof. Overall this looks like a risky proposition to me unless I could get a forum member in the area to pay a visit. Will try posting in the regional forum as suggested. Thanks

I'm going to take a contrary position to the crowd. That driver's seat leather tells me a lot about this car.

If you've been looking for a black car with low miles then what are the chances that another will show up?

I would assume that it needs a bunch of maintenance and budget for it and then roll the dice and hope you don't need it.

Re: seat belts, you can swap regular 3-point belts in with no trouble, I did it on my 89. I bought universal belts using the upper and lower mounting holes in the b-pillar.

Warlock:

Another term is flipper. Some flips are perfectly on the up and up.
Others, not so much.

So, he bought it from an estate. Could well be. So what. You think it is registered in his name? Or is he "jumping title" to escape fees.

Any ideas as to what registration issues may exist !!! Even if he wanted to help you fix them, in the eyes of any DMV, unless his name is on the title, he has no standing. So who does???

Nice car, basket of troubles potential.

BUSTED - trawled through pages after pages searching for the VIN and guess what shows up on a previous ad:

"The bad news is the paint is in very bad shape. Rust is evident on panels. Florida car that was parked close to the beach. The car had not been used for years and when we got it, we had to replace battery and some hoses to get it up and running. This is a project car or an AMAZING parts car."

https://www.wheelson.net/car-detail/...K-ON-BLACK-CAL

So yesterday I got someone from the FL area to agree to look the car over, but guess what - seller would not respond back. I bid anyway and won the auction, contacted seller saying I'm flying in to see the car, will pay cash if it looks fine. NO RESPONSE.

He knows me from previous interactions, knows that it won't pass muster. Now it all adds up - won't provide undercarriage pics, won't allow anybody to see the car beforehand even at his house, typical sleazy used car salesman.

Wow. A picture is worth a thousand words, but standing next to the thing is priceless.

Kind of sad there are people out there doing his kind of smoke and mirrors for a living. Oh well......

It made Bring-a-trailer a few weeks ago: Black over Graphite: 1989 Jaguar XJ-S | Bring a Trailer

I left a comment, don't know if it will come up.

Oh, and he listed it again, now for $11,000: http://www.ebay.com/itm/182227825383
