Default Brake pipes. DIN or SAE single?

Which type of brake pipe flaring tool do I need? Or does it depend on the type of nut I have?

The SAE pipe nuts having a deep chamfer to accept the bulb shaped flare. DIN nuts have a very small chamfer.

Am I right in thinking the caplier will accept either, as long as the nut is the right type for the flare?

The pipes I took off look like DIN to me.

Cheers!

It's a custom.

I'm refurbing the rear calipers (Girling) on a 2.88:1 powerlok axle.

This is what came off it:

I used this tool to make lines for my 78 XJ-S. It worked pretty well. All my flares, original and replacement pipes, looked like your middle picture. I reused most of the flare nuts. I believe there were SAE 7/16" fine thread. https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/...E&gclsrc=aw.ds

The car is a mixture of 7/16" fine and 3/8" fine, all 7/16" at the rear I'm sure.

The two outer flares are poorly formed originally or just overtightened.

Make sure to get a chamfering tool, bending pliers and small pipe cutter, ideally you need a straightening tool if you're buying coils but it isn't essential, you will save yourself a lot of grief with these things, do not use a hacksaw, use the chamfer tool to deburr and chamfer the ends both internally and externally this will help the die to form the connection, use lubrication on the die - take care not to get it on the pipe before you clamp it, and put the flare nut on first - nothing worse than making a good flare then seeing the nut on the bench. Do some practice ends before launching at the real pipe, plenty of youtube tutorials out there so may be worth seeking one or two out.

Hi rich333

Have a look at Page:17 on my Cherry Blossom Restoration Thread on How to Make Your Own Brake Pipes with a Kit I bought on ebay for about £35

The Kit comes will Full instructions on How to Make Single and Double Flared Pipes, which include all the dies you need if you are intending to use Cupro Nickle Brake Pipe which is about £25 for a great big roll that may even be enough to almost re-pipe the whole car

It takes a bit of Practice before you get it right, as they do need to be perfect or else they may leak

Anyway have a look at the Thread as there are lots of Photos that may help you

Although you may find it quicker and a lot less hassle to buy ready made Bridge Pipes from somewhere like British Parts about £9 each

Yes it is; it just did not look like it after it had been compressed and crushed.
