Default Cannot locate fuel filter!

Just purchased 1996 XJS. It died second time I tried to drive it. Am replacing fuel pump but cannot locate fuel filter. It is NOT where the diagram in the manual says it is. Anyone able to help? Suggestions what to look at in case fuel pump does not resolve problem?

Thanks much. Rod in eastern North Carolina

Going out on a limb here, and "assuming" its a 6 cyl.

The same year sedans has the fuel filter bolted to the body just inboard of the LH rear wheel. It is positioned "across ways" of the body. The inlet pipe faces the diff, and the outlet is facing the LHR wheel.

You will need the rear of the car up on ramps, and physically get under the car to see it.

From memory the filter is located in the left hand front wheel arch. Left hand when sitting in drivers seat facing forwards !!.

You need to remove the wheel arch liner.

Maybe someone can confirm this as it's been a few years since I changed one.

See this picture. You need to remove the wheel arch liner/plastic trim in the picture.

MelhookV12 is correct. The fuel filter is right behind the left front wheel under the plastic cover. It is the easiest fuel filter I have ever changed!

It's easy to get to but can be an absolute pig to undo if its been in situ for some time! I ended up taking mine to a garage to undo the bottom nut after 2 days of failed efforts.

As a suggestion, leave the mount bracket in place before undoing the inlet and outlet pipes. And just crack off the tension a half turn on both pipes before undoing one of them completely. Remember before you start to depressurise the fuel pressure by removing the pump relay in the boot and then cranking the engine for 2 seconds.

SO where is it on the 1992 5.3?

I see this picture but have no orientation as to the rest of the car

It's the diagram of later models with colored bumper. The 92 MY has its fuel filter in front of the LH rear tire.
