Planning to change the existing AC compressor on my 84 XJS V12 over to the Sanden unit. Thanks to Grant Francis for his wisdom on this exercise.....!

Question is about the Silencer between the Compressor and the Condenser......does it need to be there and how much silencing does it actually do....?

No, junk it. I junked mine when I fitted a Sanden years ago; absolutely NO difference, except with a Sanden the aircon is miles better. Also another piece of junk out of the engine bay.

I believe this type of muffler just acts like an expansion chamber to dampen the sound of the compressor. So I think it is kind of like an arrestor or expansion chamber to fix water hammer in plumbing.

If someone who has removed it, like Greg, says there is no difference, then you are probably good to go.

 

Thanks for the advise gentlemen...there may be a brief moment of mourning when the silencer goes.....!

Atco Air-O- Crimp fittings are also supplied buy speedy, they look like a good product....i will look into them a bit more but they will make for setting things up easier with out having to call in a hose doctor........

have fitted the new Sanden Unit, went in pretty easily just had to mod the rear mount. Photo attached.

Question is how to wire up the clutch. I have attached a photo of the old silencer and the sensor...junking the silencer so do i need the sensor...?

Do i just wire the Green / Brown power wire into the red wire on the compressor or....?

Yes goes to the power wire that goes live when you switch on the aircon. I do not know what the other wire from the silencer does, except perhaps it was a pressure sensor of some sort. Systems had such things to turn off the compressor if the high side pressures got too high. I doubt you need it with the Sanden. My car never had one even OEM.

Haven't you got a pressure switch in the rear of the compressor. that plug would go onto
that to stop the compressor in the event of a low pressure In place of the thermal fuse.
the one pictured is a trinary which also brings on the fans when a temp. is reached which isn't necessary as the fans come on when the air con is on anyway, sort of fail safe

 

That thing is seriously small! How much are they retailing for? Also, is there a thread discussing the modification of the mounting bracket to work with the Sanden?

 

About £700 from jdht but shop around, you get one for £300
There is plenty talk about but I cant find a thread as such
