Default Considering a 1995 XJS w/6

Jag brethren,

I am considering a 1995 XJS with 95,000 miles on its six cylinder power plant. I have owned and loved a 2001 XJS. I would keep both.

I'd like to know the most common issues with the XJS.

It drives well. It was been lovingly maintained but most of the systems -- elec, PS, water/thermo, tranny are original. A/C was redone. Usual wear items replaced. Fuel pump was replaced.

Asking $5,500 but needs leather work, brake bleeding, maybe stuck shutter in air vents - blowing cold at top, and heat at feet.

All thoughts welcome or references to forum entries on learning more about this vintage.

Thank you.

Go to the sticky 'How to quick links' at the top of the forum; there is a load of stuff there. Download the XJS book by Kirby Palm, it is the XJS bible.
Good luck.

Don't listen to me :-). My advice is almost always 'Buy it!'

Problems with climate control can be, well, a problem. Sometimes an easy fix. Other times a hair-puller. You won't know until you dig into the problem.

Leather replacement can be very expensive.

Watch out for rust !

The engine/trans/differential are unlikely to need any attention at 95K miles if they've been properly serviced. By "engine" I mean engine internals. Cooling system and fuel system/fuel injection might be a different story.

If you're a decent DIYer these cars are not all that expensive to run.

Cheers
DD

I would buy one which has everything working, no exceptions. If you do buy this one, be prepared for a great deal of interesting work to get it really good. Brakes, suspension, aircon, cooling system, interior. The 6 cylinder car is easier to work om under the bonnet (hood), but elsewhere is identical to the V12. As long as you can do the work yourself, enjoy such tasks, and have a covered space to do it in, then fine. But go into it open eyed, these are not drive and forget cars until they are gone though and fixed properly.

Hi Len

Unless this 1995 is a 'Celebration Model' I think I'd be 'Walking away'

In any event, I would be extremely Cautious about buying this one, as the fact they haven't bled the Brakes (which in the Scheme of things is an easy job)

Is indicating at least to me, that She could need a New Brake Pump (expensive!) and possibly a rebuild of the Master Cylinder Actuator

And maybe a New Set of Calipers

You could easily end up Spending $2,000 to get her 'up to snuff'

In her present Condition, She's coming across as well over priced to me where considering the work involved I wouldn't pay a penny more than $3,000

Do yourself a favour a find another one, where everything is working like 'Greg' said

I have had my 95 4.0 coupe for close to 6 years and would love to add a V12 6.0 convertible.
