Default Convertible top hits rear seats

My top touches the rear seats when lowering. It has done this since I’ve owned the car for 3 years. It’s a fair amount of touch, on two folds, but never enough to hinder the top operation- yet. That’s my concern. This can’t be normal. Anyone else have this issue? If so any tips to fix it are appreciated. Thanks.

I have the same issue with my ‘96 4.0. The seatbelt retractors are scuffed badly. I’m considering removing the seatbelts entirely to see if there is a way to make it look right. They’re useless anyway.

Hi Guys

Also happens on my 1995 4.0L and has been doing ever since I bought the Car when she was almost New

There's nothing much that you can do about this in the way of a permanent fix, except to keep putting a 'Duster' or piece of Soft Material, in between the Soft Top Rail and the back of the Seat whenever you lower the Soft Top, to prevent it cutting into the Leather

Then once having done so carefully assisting the Soft Top Rail into place, just a little bit at a time, as the rail is about to make contact with the back of the Seat 'being careful not to jam your fingers'

That's really all that you can do about it, as its just the 'Nature of the Beast'

Have you ever removed and reinstalled the rear seats?

I believe if you put the seats on first, then the back, you will have this problem. If you install the seat backs first, locking in place, then fit the seat bottoms in, it may solve your problem.

My understanding is that there are cables inside the hood designed pull the hood away from the seatbelt bumps. They may be broken or loose. Call Paul’s Jaguar in Florida, I think that is who described the problem and solution initially.

This tip comes from another site and it worked for me:

The short of it is. if you lift the carpet under the back window you will see 2 bolts with washers on each side. these bolts push and pull the bracket that is attached to the back window frame. The
holes in the frame are adjustable. I simply loosened the bolts, adjusted the bracket, retightened the bolts and … As they say, ‘‘that was all she wrote’’. It now clears the back seat by
aproxmiately a 1/4 of an inch. The top is now also much tighter to the windshield when bolted. Hope it also solves your problem.

Interesting. My top was fine until I installed a new interior. It now rubs on the top of the seats. I'll have to try reinstalling doing the back first. Thanks for the tip ;-))

I also followed this advice, I found it posted here, sure enough my drivers side cable was broken. It was a pain in the butt to replace, but did the trick.

Did you take any pictures? If so, please send some so I can see where these cables are on my 96 convertible.
