Default Fuel sump tank

Can anyone tell me the best way to undo the ring holding the fuel suction pipe in. I want to change the filter. Thanks again for any assistance.

Take a piece of hardwood, or a brass rod, place it against one of the three tangs on the locking ring and tap it anticlockwise, as soon as the ring moves, use another of the tangs, and so on. You must use a new rubber seal though when refitting.

yup just need to rotate it by taping on the tangs, using a screw driver or a blunt punch is common, using a brass or other soft metal punch/rod is a bit more ideal though.

metal on metal (sparks) is a really really bad idea in this area. Wood, the handle end of a hammer, makes right sense...

Whats the matter? You'all don't want a free trip to Mexico??? I've tapped several off rings off all kinds of Gas tanks with punches, screwdrivers. I guess it would be possible to go Boom. But I don't ever remember seeing any sparks, ever??? I have a sneaking feeling, they made the ring, and the other pieces around it of a metal that won't spark, when struck with another piece of metal, Correct me if I'm wrong but I think it would be a ferrous metal? Maybe we've got an engineer on here that can set me straight?

The locking ring is made of steel.

While I don't have the confidence in automotive engineers that Jacobra does... If you're using enough force on a screwdriver or punch, to create sparks on your gas tank... You're probably doing something wrong. Apply common sense, be careful, and use the best tool that you have on-hand to get the job done.

Right... IMHO,,, best tool,,, ALL things considered - would be wood... Kinda gives a little and grabs nicely, too. Jus say'n. Sparks can be and often are micro. Then, factor in that you are working in the light and not looking for it - many sparks are missed. Static electricity can even cause problems with fuel. Safety first.

Just to say ring was removed safely and the tank is now stewing in 4 litres of white vinegar to clean all the crap out. Can’t believe the sludge in there. Thanks all for the safety concerns.

I stuck an ACE hardware store magnet on the bottom outside of the fuel sump. Don't know if it did any good yet though. I'll report next time it's off/open

It won’t hurt. The sump drain plug is magnetic and it’s an eye opener the amount of debris stuck to that when it’s removed. The filter change is a good idea if you don’t know the history as is reading Kirby palms notes.

I believe Kirby removed the in sump screen filter & replaced it with aftermarket micro filter. Something I will do, "when I get around to it".........
