GM400 filter mounting bolt
Hi, I am in the middle of replacing the oil filter in the auto box and found than the mounting bolt doesn't actually trap the filter but allows it to flop about somewhat. There is a tube type spacer which is about 6mm shorter than the shoulder of the bolt. Should there be a grommet in the oval mounting hole?
Thanks Greg, I thought it was how it should be but I can't for the life of me see why, when every other transmission I've played with has a fully anchored filter.
The whole reason for fitting a new filter and this time a new O ring at the top of the pickup tube is that when the car is not used for a couple of weeks it makes a strange noise on start up, air being pulled through i think, which goes away after 30 seconds or so. Gearbox works beautifully though. Any thoughts?

The actual oil pump in the engine is known for cavitation noise on start up, a bit like a lonely cow or Moose lowing loudly. Mine does it sometimes and sometimes not; a feature, not a fault. Jaguar knew about it and issued offical advice to not worry!
Mine does this. Stops after driving around 5 mines and only makes the noise from cold. Servicing the box didn’t make any difference.

Because, if it is the "normal" noise, it is the engine oil pump, not the gearbox that is making the noise.

Sorry Greg should have said engine oil pump. I’m sure it’s normal as I have excellent oil pressure of around 80 psi when cold dropping to 60 ish when hot and 25 on hot tick over. It also comes up quickly on cold starting. This year I am trying Penrite HPR 10w/50 fully synthetic. I had a can in the garage so only had to buy one. So far very good.

Another tip with the turbo 400 is to double up the o-ring fitted to the pickup tube. Learned this with the turbo 400 in my '67 Camaro. My transmission also recently developed a whine similar to a straight cut gear whine. I performed a fluid and filter change that solved the problem. During the fluid change I checked the o-rings on the pickup tube and they were good. Just a thought to pass on.

The double o-ring is to ensure a good seal as, I guess from past research, the turbo 400 is weak in this area. All I know from experience is it helped solve my issue of pump whine. I am running a stock depth, Derale pan.
