Default How big is the fuel tank in a coupe?

new guy on this forum (without a jaguar) with a couple of questions.

before you jump down my throat, i don't mean fuel volume--i know that one, 25 US gallons, right?

my question is, does it occupy the entirety of the back wall of the trunk?

for a little perspective, i was wondering if it would be possible to put a ski pass-through in one of these cars like some of the bmw-people have been doing. (do a google search on "ski-pass through bmw diy" for some background)

anyway, i figure if the fuel tank is flush against the entirety of the rear bulkhead, there's no way to get it done. if there's some wiggle room between the top of the fuel tank and bottom of the rear window, i might be in luck.

...or... somewhere i've read the convertibles have a smaller (shorter?) fuel tank to allow for the roof to retract. could this be used in a coupe for my purposes?

The tank takes up all of the room behind the back seat. Only way I see it could be done is to remove a setion from the middle of the tank, make the tank a U shape. You would also need to move the spare wheel.

Don't know about the convertible tank

cheers

Doing a restoration on a '78 XJ-S. The tank is 24 gallons, and definitely takes up all available room over the rear suspension. In addition, the spare tire is also in the way on the left side, and the battery on most of the right side.
I recommend a roof rack, mini trailer, or taking a different vehicle as the only reasonable options.
