I am ready to reinstall my fuel injectors. As I see it, it looks like I have to put the clamp plates on the rail over the hoses before the injectors go onto the hoses. I also see that the plates are directional as far as the notches for the electric plugs. So, If I have made the correct assumption this would be the assembly order- fuel rail, ferrule, hose, injector clamp, 2nd ferrule, injector. If that is the correct order, then what is the pattern to the clamps as far as notch forward or notch rearward? Thanks!
Injector in its hole,
Plate and insulator installed, whatever way is needed for the wiring connection
Ferrule
Hose
Ferrule
Rail.
The both #1 get hosed after the other 10, its just easier.
Every V12 I have been involved in has the connector in a different orientation, and I doubt there is any actual schematics for fore and aft, but maybe in 1976 there was one, dunno.
I have a 1979 pre-HE and was just starting the strip down at the beginning of Covid. All I've done so far is strip off the injection stuff. But I did take lots of photos of it all in situ.
I'm attaching one below. Does that help you? If not let me know and I'll dig out some more.
Yes I suspect it is different. I am thinking that since things are so tightly packed that the wire harness would require the plates to be in a certain position.
Do you need a picture?
I recently removed the motor from an '88 XJS. I have cleaned it off and removed the A/C, throttle tower etc. It shows the fuel rail and connectors very easily now without lots of other clutter. The motor is sitting on a pallet I built in my garage.
Yes please, I dug around and found a few pics that I took which show most of them, but the b bank 1 and 2 are really not visible in mine. My concern too is that I donk know if that was even correct. Not sure if anyone else was ever in there although I doubt it. Maybe it doesn't matter that much which way they go. I was planning to assemble the injectors to the rail and then install them since i had quite a trial getting the hoses seated properly on the rail.
PM me your e-mail and I'll send the pictures I just took.
The flat side of the plates face forward on the front 6 cylinders, 3 x on each bank A and B, and rearward on the back 6 cylinders.
You do have unclip the electrical connectors to the injectors to everything to come apart more easily.
I am experimenting with the engine I just pulled to see about re-routing the wiring harness up out of the valley and in direct contact with the motor. It will be a bit messier looking but will undoubtedly be much easier on the wiring harness. Huge difference in temperature from the engine metal to even 6 -8" away.
I got rid of the air injector system on my car so that helped clean up the engine appearance as well.
all that you guys are talking about, i went a different way!
solid aluminum rails ,O-rings top and bottom, rails bolted to manifolds,NO MORE worries about fuel lines leaking and fire!
stainless hi pressure feed and return lines, tested to 300psi.
i use a much higher fuel pressure than factory! better atomization, adjustable fuel P regulator!
OB- Yes thanks, I have all new orings and ferrules too. I sent the injectors off to Mr. Faircloth at Jaguar Fuel Injector Service for a Real cleaning and got the supplies from him at the time.
Ronbros- That looks great, but sadly its not going to happen to me!
Going back to Grants post, is it "correct procedure" to build it motor up instead of assembling the rail first? Going off my Limited experiences with the 4.0 in the other cars, I had much better luck with them installing the built up rail and just thought it would be easier especially after seeing how much pressure it took to push those hoses completely on to the rail for this car.
You MIGHT be, but that's a different story - hahaYou own an XJS.
In some cases I think what's right in a job is up to the person doing it. One thing I think I remember struggling with was fiddling with the injector ends at the intake, getting everything lined up, pushed in and down - with the bits above all in the right place, and stuff. Long arms to reach across the bay helped here. Just took my time, car literally wasn't going anywhere, 😊
