hi
i have just bought a jag xjs v12 1987
after driving it home i opened the bonnet and found there to be oil coming from the left air filter housing so i cleaned it up and went for a drive i got home and checked to see if there was any oil there and there was.
what could be causing this?

OK, first thing, you are NEW, so welcome.
greg has nailed it. That vent system is a bugga at best, and makes a real mess of filter elements and where it all drips to.
Mostly caused by crankcase compression, and on a V12 that is due to toooooo quiet a driving style.
This engine just loves to rev, and since you have just purchased it, you are naturally cautious.
Do what Greg said, most important.
Give it an oil change, using a good quality oil, then do all the sensible checks, and go for a "good squirt", as we say.
My V12's get all hissy with city driving and a good 1000km interstate blast on a regular basis, does absolute wonders to them.
