master cylinder specifics
Changed to name from another post since I'm now concentrating on the master cylinder.
My master cylinder is a Girling. Girling says that the bore size is embossed on the cylinder. Despite my best efforts to clean it while its still in the car I can't make out the bore size. Since I can't find a master cylinder from Girling (or anyone else) I'll try rebuilding the one I have.
I can find the rebuild kits, but of course each kit is for a specific bore size. Does anyone happen to know if all V-12 (5.3L) XJ-S's were fitted with a particular bore size, and if so what this size is?
If push comes to shove I'll remove the cylinder and measure the bore, but that makes the car undrivable until the rebuild kit arrives. I'd like to keep down time to a minimum, so if I knew that 1987 XJ-S's all had the same bore size it would be helpful.
Thanks to all,
John

Problem is, 23.8 mm works out to 15/16th of an inch. Not a diameter Girling shows a kit available for.
My choices are 5/8", 0.70", 3/4" bore and 7/8" bore. The closest of these, 7/8ths, is 1.6 mm less in diameter than 23.8mm.
I wonder if the cupped washers are supposed to make up the difference?
Thanks,
John

Hi Greg,
Do you know what bore size?
I'd buy a master cylinder if I could find one. Lot's on e-bay, if you have a Vandan Plas, XJ12 or XJ6, but none that I can find for the XJS.
Thanks!

Sorry, no idea; I just know kits from Manners will fit. Also, if you are really stuck there are places in England that refurb M/Cs and as part of the process line the bore with stainless tube.

John,
Not sure where you've tried, but on the face of it, there doesn't seem to be a problem. Just 30 secs on Google turned up the following from the usual Jaguar US independents::
https://www.jagbits.com/product/CAC1583-X.html
https://www.ebay.com/itm/37417551233...512338&vxp=mtr

Thanks Greg.
I just pulled it and am going to send it to a refurbuisher in Virginia, an outfit called White Post Restorations. Talked to them today, they seem competent. They say they can turn it around in 1.5 - 2 weeks for $200 and change. They also sleeve it with stainless steel.
As an aside they said they can't work on Teva (sp?) units due to special tools required and lack of parts.
We shall see.
Thanks to all for the input,
John

I purchased a brand new Master Cylinder from Paul's Jaguar in Ft Lauderdale and received it yesterday. I have already installed it and bled my brakes. So all is good.
None of the vendors listed above with the exception of the ebay ad (Paul's Jaguar) has this item in stock.
Welshent has a refurbished one but require a $200.00 core charge.
