Default Cylinder Numbering?

I thought it would be pretty simple to figure out which cylinder is the #6 cylinder, but an hour of googling, including searching this forum, has left me more confused than when I started. Apparently Jaguar has used several different numbering schemes over the years, and even the mighty google doesn't know how they are numbered on the 5.0 liter supercharged engines.

I found this thread here on Jaguar Forums, but even it isn't clear. The thread ends with no definitive answer. On Saturday I'm going to start tearing down half of my engine to get the cylinder head off, and I don't want to take off the wrong one.

Does anyone have a diagram which shows cylinder numbering?

I'm going to take this as gospel and remove the left cylinder head.

What the hell kind of cryptic nonsense is this? It would confuse way more than it would clarify.

Yes, I know what it means and yes, it's not that difficult...
just....... WHY???

See my post #4:

I've put the diagram in the FAQ's in the ENGINE section.

Yes, very strange way to describe cylinder numbering.

Maybe it's why they changed to the standard way...

Thanks for everyone's help. I have manual in .pdf format for both the car and the engine, but I couldn't find the cylinder numbering. As usual, this forum came to my rescue.

British humor?

Or an aptitude test, if you can't decipher the code you don't deserve to know the secret of the cylinder firing order.

Very odd for sure, glad someone numbered the diagram in a normal fashion.

It was someone in Jaguar (or Ford?), who apparently decided at last to follow the standard
