nebwbie Q for gurus RE: Window motor Gear
Gentlemen, I hope this finds your families and selves well.
I tend to not ask too many questions, given I have been busy with nothing but wins on my XJS thanks to your past exploits found within. Accolades and Superlatives!
So I have done a modest amount of searching and everything leads me to a gear in the window motor casing needing replacing, but I can't find anything that leads me to a direct replacement...
Specifics of my scenario:
Is there a replacement or a definitive write up somewhere that can shed light? I did'nt see anything else in the book other than this or that maybe might work.
I would love to hear that "oh yes! of course this part#6352425 fits nicely" and that would be that!
All I see are expensive used motors for sale everywhere. I just always thought the nylon gear ( "worm gear" is it?) would be in the regulator?
I am ready for bad news because I just bought a new brake accumulator and working used brake fluid pump to find my ABS block is possibly frozen up.
( no rear brakes, but now I have power assisted front brakes!) I know how deep system rabbit holes can go....
I just see no purpose in removing the regulator and motor again when all my efforts to date have only given me windows which work sometime.
( better then when I had windows that worked none of the time)
I thank anyone who takes a casual interest and sets me firmly on the road to enlightenment and power windows.

Specifics of my scenario:
- Regulators seems to work given my windows from time to time will go up and down.
- My switches have been cleaned, all contacts cleaned,
- Motors always respond to input both up and down, but I get a popping sound or simply no motion when raising window.
- Sometimes I can assist, but it clearly seems to me a nylon gear or something that has gotten chewed up.
- I have had regulators off, greased everything up.
- I have the motors with the two flat sides to them, I think second generation.
- They always work when given power, in my hand, either direction.

Here is a link to an Ebay page for XJS window motors. Earlier today I saw an online add for replacement motors and systems its name was something like NWM, but I couldn't find it again. anyway try some of these listings and maybe you can find what you need. Good luck.

That sure could be helpful, but I for some reason am having difficulty understanding what gear/ where is bad? The motors seem to have torque when I apply voltage in my hand. The output of the motor is another metal gear. I think I recall seeing the recieving gear in the regulator, but I could not see any damage. Where is this "worm gear"?
Is it in the regulator or the motor? I just need to understand the typical failure mode before I go and buy another used motor.
I admitted being a newbie in the title! Just the system seems so simple. Motor mounts to regulator, if motor works, and regulator works, why no work? heh

ok. So now I get it. It's the castle gear that likely needs replacing... and that can be a difficult proposition getting it open / replaced etc... I will keep my research going, and attempt repairs on my parts car motors first and if successful then replace.
I also get the reticence to comment given how common this issue is. peacb

I think I found the route I am going to go. Reverse the gear, lodge some obstructions behind the worm hear to enhance engagement. I have taken the units on and off so many times shouldn't take more than 30 minutes to swap out. Driver's side first. I will make necessary repairs/ alterations on parts car parts, and put in.
