Hi, just replace my 7 year old battery. now my driver power window will not operate. Went to check fuses and all are ok. Owners manual has no listing for a fuse for the windows. Is there one? If so where might it be.

Not sure what model year you have, but those switches may need a cleaning. I’d check your connection first. It’s not terribly hard to access.

Remove that center console to reveal the ski slope screw and boom!

 

You may read that it's possible to remove the window switches by prising them out from above. DON'T! You will break the retaining tangs and the switches are not available new.

Do it as Vee described and lift the ski slope.

I’m reading a lot of posts about removing the ground cable and touching it to the positive cable to reset the system. Apparently after replacing the battery you have to do a reset. Not sure if that works for my XJS.

That's the first I've heard about anything needing "resetting" on a 4 litre XJS. I've changed batteries, had them run flat etc etc. Never done a "reset". The only things that may possibly need resetting are the alarm fobs. Certainly things like windows, roof etc have no clever systems that need resetting after power loss.

I’ll confirm that there is no such reset on an XJS. Anyone who says different is full of it.

 

Bob, OBDII cars (your's) have NO computer circuits for power windows. I have lost count of how many window switches I've replaced. Each time a window doesn't work, I do a real easy diag to confirm. Slip a thin, metal blade (putty knife, etc) under the switch housing and swap the connectors between left and right switches. If the offending window works, it's the switch. Quick, easy and definitive.
And, yes, the only thing to "reset" is the alarm module, clock, and radio as Paul mentioned.

Make sure the replacement switch has metal tabs on it. The plastic ones cannot be pressed through the bezel.

I basically bought the cheaper plastic ones and replaced the inners, keeping the original shell, if you will.

I know that the Workshop Manual says to lift the switch panel from the top, but seriously, Don't!

It's slightly more work but lift the skislope as suggested. You're far less likely to break the switch plinth or the switch itself.

You can also then swap the wires over with the passenger one and test which may confirm if you have a gummed-up switch.

Thanks everyone who responded. I was away a couple of days and didn't take the lap top. Picked up the car tonight after having all fluids changed and miraculously the window works. Must be a Jaguar Genii.
