Default Pre Facelift Outer Door Handles

I have an ‘88 XJ-S; surprise, the driver’s outer handle broke. Found a pair at a reasonable price in the UK, and found the flapper to be the rounded style on the left one, but with the correct orientation of the lock cylinder (my car had the square type originally). The right hand is the same as on the car. I guess that I should have inquired as to whether they were off the same vehicle.
Does anyone know the model years for the rounded, horizontal lock cylinder, the rounded vertical lock cylinder, and the square flapper handles?
There also may be a variation on the lock cylinder bell crank to accommodate the power lock solenoid.
Inquiring minds want to know…..

RGK20m3,

If you look on the Jaguar Parts website, you'll find the changepoints for the door handles / locks. Changes are always by defined VIN rather than year.

Cheers

I have the parts and ROM on CD, I couldn’t determine what is what and the VIN cuts. Only 2part numbers shown. I will have to look harder.

If you use the Jaguar parts website, I think you'll find it easier than using an old CD-ROM of parts, which presumably is only for one of the era of XJSs - pre-HE, HE or Facelift?

Just looked and same as HE parts listing that I have on CD; one part up to 148781 (1989 MY). Mine is 146363- but there are apparently 3 variants (or more) as mine has square type. Where does the rounded flapper fit in (according to photos online prior to ‘87). And when did the lock cylinder orientation change? Clear as mud….

I don't know much about HE models. Did you look in the 1981-1987 parts sections? Any useful info there?

I have looked at numerous publications and here is what seems to be indicated-
BD44890 is the handle used up to car 105380 (1981, just after HE introduced at 105048). It has the chrome cup and horizontal lock cylinder.
BBC5933 is for 105381-148781 and has black cup and vertical lock cylinder.
BBC6561 is for 148782 and up, also black cup and vertical lock cylinder.
BEC8977 is Tibbe key (facelift).

BAC4541 is either a supercedence from/to BBC5933

I am guessing BD44890 and BBC5933 have the square flipper, and BBC6561 is rounded, but that is my original question, is the square flipper the early or late handle?

A photo of what you are describing would be a help.

Bottom photo shows square flapper; top is rounded- is square the early part?

RGK20m3,

It's just a zoom-in of an old pic of the door of my 1979 pre-HE. Don't know if you can see from this what on an original 1979 car? I'll take a better pic tomorrow.

Paul

That photo depicts the square flipper and solves the issue. Thank you!
