Default PS leak

HI all,

Last fall I replaced my Rack on the XJS. It has worked great. Today I hear the PS pump whinning a bit and when I looked under found a drip of PS fluid. I hate the idea of going under and lowering the rack to get to hoses (assuming that is the issue). Does anyone know a better way? I have heard lowering the cross member will allow access to everything underneath. If so how does one lower the cross member??

Thanks,

Tony

Assuming a V12.

The crossmember is a PAIN to lower, and LOTS of things need removing/undoing/loosening to achiever this. The rack is a SNAP by comparison.

The p/s oil cooler, tucked in the LH engine mount bracket is a MAJOR leaker in some cars, as are the hoses to and from it.

My first suggestion is to syringe out the remaining fluid, and top off with Synthetic Trans Fluid. Start the engine, rotate the steering wheel lock to lock a few times. Shut it down, syringe it out again, and refill again. Do this 3 or 4 times to get the Synthetic Fluid concentration right up there. This has stopped many a weeper for me over the years.

The return hoses also get very hard and brittle, and the clamps then fail to maintain seal. Some new 10mm transmission hose and new clamps does wonders.
