Success!, Both side lamps are now working but the problems were slightly different. First port of call was to pull the fuses and check them. They are the blade type. Sure enough the right had side had blown and once replaced the lamp worked. Well done Greg and jal1234. This still left the left hand side . I knew the fuse was ok and checked I had 12 v. I decided to check the supply to the bulb at its connection and I had 12 v there too. Checked bulb and that was ok. It was when I rested it on the bumper and the light came on I realised it was an earth. I pulled the earth wire from the bulb and sure enough the bullet connector was all crusty. Scraped it clean with a screwdriver and bingo. So thanks to the coaching I got there. Just need to sort the lamp bulbs now. Both the inners are h1 55w. One of the outers is h1 55/60w and one is h4 55/60 w. Anyway much obliged to you.

Well that's a new one for me. I've never heard of a dual filament H1 bulb. I would replace that with an H4 lamp and bulb.
