You haven't said what XJS you have? The radio wiring on very early cars is different.
However, if you've got a later XJS, it's very easy to find a wiring adapter. Just google "Jaguar XJS radio ISO wiring adapter" or similar. You'll find a simple plug adapter for about $5 on eBay which means you can keep your existing wiring.
Also, I think a number of people have been unable to install those flip screen units as it fouls against other parts of the dash, when you try an open the screen I would seriously look at whether it can fit in an XJS.
you bring up a good point. The car is with the mechanic currently. I get it back next week. I'll check the clearance of the flip out screen to see if would actually fit.

Assuming your car is a pre-facelift, the reverse light switch is activated mechanically by the gearlever. If you remove the console you will see a smallish cannister-like thing on the LHS of the lever with a sprung bal-end that is pushed in by the lever whennit isnin reverse. The cannister is adjusted by two threaded nuts so it engages properly. You just take a feed of the output side of the switch.

this is correct. ive looked into this and a single din with a full touch screen face is the way to go.
also, any luck with a wiring harness ? I cannot find one for a 1990 XJS.
in my experience in installing radio systems I tend to hard wire directly into the factory harness. it takes longer to do but I never plan on going back to stock harness. and most people now want blue tooth for android auto / apple car play so retaining stock harness isn't a concern.
however in doing this you should leave a few inches of wiring from the stock plugs so if you want to return to stock radio its an easy to go back.
No way that the screen can open/close with the transmission stick in park. There will not be enough clearance. If you need AC control access, good luck. I happen to have a trip computer, and that would be rendered useless by this screen....it is nice though.
The Blaupunkt seems like a cheap, poorly designed radio. The reviews have some consistent issues with bluetooth memory/selectivity, sound setting memory getting deleted, and other problems. For a $400+ radio, I would look elsewhere.
A number of fitments by owners seem to show that you can't mount it flush and have to have it sticking out from the standard recess which looks rather messy. In that video of the Pioneer unit, it doesn't seem to be mounted flush? Also concerns about the angle of the screen, unless you mount the unit further forward.. And it will cover the trip computer when in use. Not sure about whether it might have clearance to open when in Park. See these threads:
I totally agree. for this to be considered it has to:
be a flush, clean mount. sticking out like those from the other thread look bad (to me).
be able to open to a vertical, viewable angle and clear the shifter in park.
Once I get my car back I will do some measurements, but I am extremely doubtful. I'll also email the installed from the video and ask if that was flush mounted or if they used some needed spacer that push the unit out enough to function.
OK, I looked at the car and did some basic measurements. the video scree would not be able to open while that car is in park. It needs 6.25" and from what I see i'd only get about 5.25" a full inch short.
I've been going through the same process. I'm considering a touchscreen, but one that does not flip up. It's adjustable, but my only concern is how far it will stick out. The nice part of the one linked below is, I don't believe it will interfere with access to anything above the receiver. It gets good reviews and it's on sale. I usually wouldn't consider Boss, but it seems solid.
I was a little bummed that the Pioneer flip up won't fit well. The Boss you found is a good compromise and for the price you can't beat it. I like that it has apple Car play. If you do install it, send pictures.
