Default Removing starter motor on 3.6

Hi all,

Have been considering removing the starter motor on my '90, 3.6. The official manual states that steering rack, power steering, exhaust pipe and steering column have to be removed first. Sounds like lots of work. Has anyone found any work arounds that don't require so much dismantling?

The reason I am considering removal of the starter motor is that I occasionally get that horrible groaning noise as the engine fires which I think indicates that the starter motor drive dog (bendix?) is not flicking out of engagement quick enough. Hopefully just needs cleaning and some lubrication. The noise only lasts a few seconds but I'm concerned the starter or ring gear may get damaged.

Thanks for reading and any advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
LeeP

Looks like older post.. but I am about to get my starter out. I have 1985 and my service manual does not ask for any steering or exhaust relater pieces to be removed (they are not even close). Are 1990 models that different? Mine said to remove air cleaner and housing, tie bar, oil dipstick assembly, and oil filter bracket/tube.

I had similar noise, but now car doesn't start at all. I am interested to know how interchangeable starters are. I am looking here https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic...ile/index.html and can't find exact part number I need.

Hi and thanks for picking up.

Haven't sorted my starter yet as having sorted some ignition problems my starting puts less strain on the motor so have moved onto other priorities for the moment.

As far as I know there aren't too many differences between '85 and '90 3.6. I've checked my manual and confirmed it refers to removing the parts in my original post but maybe they assume you are in a cosy workshop with a car hoist so suggest removing lots of parts assuming you have easy access. I know with ingenuity and perseverance you can often get by with less of a strip down. The other thing is that looking at where you are based your car may be a left hand drive (?) so that may mean less steering parts to remove. Anyways would be keen to hear how you get on.

Regarding starter motor part numbers my parts manual suggests the following variations:
  • up to engine 9DPAMA 101291 - DAC2471E
  • from engine 9DPAMA 101292 to 101425 - DAC8337E
  • from engine 9DPAMA 101426 to VIN 139051 - DBC1939E
  • from VIN 139052 - DBC 2937E
Hope this helps find one.

Being a 3.6 stick shift your car must be pretty rare your side of the pond - was it imported?

Cheers,
LeeP

Yes, left hand drive. Is your starter located on the right side of the car? (mine is on left) Will probably take it out this week and will post how it went.

I am looking at these seem like interchangeable parts: dbc2937N > DBC2937E> DBC6923N, SR491X(bosh) . According to yours I need DBC1939E - will doublecheck. Thank you.

I've heard some stories that limited number of these 3.6 cars was imported. But I know I am not alone. Love manual shift :-)

Cheers.

And few hours later I present "the beast" to the world... Thank you for the encouragement :-)

To sum up - needed a lot of patience. The top bolt is quite a PITA to unscrew. I didn't know that top bolt is screwed into starter from other side of clutch compartment while bottom bolt is screwed from starter side into clutch side. I've spent quite a time to figure out top bolt as it's impossible to see other side of it..
As seen in picture I moved tie bar to a side, but it wasn't absolutely necessary. Little helpful, perhaps during assembly as well.
Oil dipstick assembly was in the way, one little bolt to remove - almost enjoyed removing this one.

Grinding sound on start is totally explained - if I move the 'thing'(gear) forward - it does not retract back as it should. And I can see that tips of the teeth are gone.

Also it is kinda obvious now that dbc2937N is not my starter, mine does look like DBC1939E so I will need to make sure to order the right one. Time to do some shopping (after a well deserved dose of beer)!

Cheers!

Well done and you certainly deserved that beer!

Thanks for posting those great pics. They will certainly help me if I do need to remove the starter on mine.

How did you get to that top bolt - from above the engine or below?

Cheers,
LeeP

To brake it loose I was reaching from below with thin 1/2" 12 point wrench. But after that I found a way to actually see the bolt head and continued with a short 13mm wrench from top.

Ordered this one:
Amazon Amazon
Installed today and it works. $70 no core return... not bad.

I have to admit the reason car wasn't starting was not the starter. That nut next to clutch reservoir that connects all the 'pluses' with battery became loose and there was no juice coming to starter. It was fun to install new starter to only hear click with no go :-)

With that said old starter had to go as it was almost dead anyway, so I am very happy it is replaced. No more grinding sounds. While there sanded and cleaned all the connections - now it spins so fast, sound like on just starter I can get a speeding ticket.

Cheers!
