Default Replacing Window Switch’s

1993 XJS Convertible

Any guidance on how to replace console switches like the convertible and l/r power window switches? Bought new ones to replace operating ones but that just had a lot of wear and tear on them.

Mbower1967,

You really need to lift the centre console veneer and then release the locating tangs from below to remove the switches.

Good luck

1. Remove the armrest cubby. I think it’s about 5 phillips screws.

2. This exposes the 1 phillips head screw that keeps the ski slope in place. Remove.

3. Tilt up the ski slope so you can access the window switch assemble from below….

you should know what to do at that point.

Bee, these are exactly the instructions I was looking for. Will tackle this weekend. If you think of anything further that would help please let me know.

My 1988 car has a couple fasten points also, one on each side, you access them by removing the ashtrays. They are U shaped brackets, so don't take the screws all the way out, if your car has those. Saves dropping a screw into the harness mess underneath.

Ditto on the U shaped brackets.
I also have a vague recollection of having to pries out the catch receptacle for the armrest in order to remove the metal bracket that spans across the very rear of the ski slope but it was a while ago when I did this.

Cheers,

You shouldn't have to remove the ski slope, just tilt it high enough to unplug the two or three switches you have, and then pry out the entire bezel assembly. then do what you want. Just make sure you remember which plug is which! They are all the same, so you run the risk of plugging the drivers side switch to the passengers side plug.

Also, if you bought the cheap replacement switch with the plastic tabs, the only way I was able to squeeze the switch into the bezel was after heating the tabs up on the switch with a hairdryer.

Yep. My basic rule is always grab the Pozi screwdriver first. Only when that doesn't work do you grab the other...
