Out of curiosity what is the rim colour supposed to be? It certainly isn't gangster chrome, I tried scanning mine on a polished section with a phone App..no luck.
mine are tarnished and seem to be shedding their coating in spots? I want to plasti-dip them in the appropriate silver-ish colour.
For those unaware plastidip is a removable plastic skin paint you peel it off after if your done with it, can be great to 'see' what your car is like with black trim etc or to reskin faded rubber and painted surfaces temporarily.

It also isn't supposed to be PlastiDip!
I have "Dipped" a number of things but wouldn't attempt it on lattice wheels. There's no way you could get even coverage and trying to remove it would a nightmare. Stick with the Autoglym.
Here’s mine. Striped, etch primed, primed, top coated with a wheel silver paint and the lacquered. I kept the outside of the rim polished aluminium as I like the style. Easy job to do over a few days.
Rob.
Etch primer often has phosphoric acid to promote adhesion, and some have zinc for corrosion inhibition on steel. It's a primer designed to go over bare metal and promote adhesion between the metal and the primers and finial colour coats on top. Sometimes it's also called Vinyl Wash primer.
I don't think it would be advisable to do it in place, as there will always be a masking edge somewhere near the bead of the tire. That's a place where it's difficult to prepare the surface, and the masking line is always a place where the paint will want to peel at the edge. It would be better to take the tire off and then the paint completely coats the rim and there isn't an edge to lift.
It will probably work short term to mask and paint in place, but I would expect the paint to start peeling or flanking off sooner than if the tire was removed and the whole rim painted as one.

If you are attempting this and are leaving the tire on buy a deck of cards and slide them between the rim/tire as a mask. Have done this on a few tires. Works great.
I always liked the lattice style wheels. I've seen them in silver, black, gold, and even red IIRC. I have a set from a parts car it anyone wants to try refurbishing them. They need to be cleaned. $50 takes all four.
