Default sourcing the correct transmission filter

I just received my filter/gasket kit from Rockauto for my 4.0 '95 XJS...it didn't fit! The pan gasket fits perfectly, but the filter has a 2 1/2" 'pick up' pipe that doesn't fit inside my pan. The orginal has a side port but I can't find that model anywhere. I have removed the pick up pipe but am concerned the distance between the pipe flange (about 2mm below the filter surface) and the pan will not allow sufficient flow. Has anyone else come across this? Is there sufficient gap between the filter and the pan for sufficient flow? any thoughts appreciated.

You need this one, so for a shallow transmission pan. Partnr: JLM 664

Absolutely...I'm having a hard time finding it in North America (Canada).

flyingphil,

It sounds like you didn't order the correct part number. As I've mentioned before on this forum, the Jaguar part system is wrong and all the big suppliers use the Jaguar system. Just order the part number I've quoted - DO NOT order a filter for a "4.0 XJS" or you'll get sent the wrong filter as you've found it.

And why not just order it from Jaguar's Classic Parts website? I don't know about Canada, but they used to have a big US Parts distribution setup and stock. Just order JLM664.

Cheers

Paul

Default Unavailable.

Thanks for the part number Paul. Unfortunately, it currently states’part not available’. Hence the problem. If you know of someone else that sells this, it would be much appreciated.

Everything from Classic comes DHL from the UK. Jaguar dealers here and Classic might as well be two different companies, my local dealer could not get parts that I was able to order from Classic Parts. Apparently each country decides what parts to stock and the Classic program is separate from regular dealer parts supply for more modern cars.

Add up the shipping and DHL fees and you are looking at a minimum £40-50 to start.

Which filter did you order? I had a look at the listings and nearly every one I saw supposedly for the XJS 4.0 was actually for the GM transmission used in the V12, not the ZF. There seem to be lots of errors in the RockAuto listings for the sedans as well, I saw some showing 1988-97 VDP, XJ6 and XJR as the same, when the XJR used the GM transmission.

I ordered the Beck/Arnley (0440229) filter and gasket. The correct gasket but the filter is for the deep pan. I chopped off the 2 1/2 inch pick up pipe, then used a magnet and brake cleaner to remove any metal filings. I couldn't remove the pipe collar without making a huge mess, so it protrudes about 2mm below the pan. I'm hoping there's sufficient clearance to the bottom of the pan to allow unrestricted flow.

I wonder if the 0440216 would work? The application is a 1988 XJ6. That has the 4HP22 transmission instead of the 4HP24, but as far as I know the only major difference is the electronic controls of the 4HP24.

This one shows a really short pickup tube. Is that what you need? It's ATP B80

Other option is a Wix 58962. You can get that locally at Autovalue for about $42.

Are there really no US Jaguar specialists that offer JLM664 for sale? There are quite a few in the UK. I wouldn't have thought it would be that hard to get JLM664 stateside?

OP is in Canada. Very different countries! Being in Canada myself, it's usually cheaper and easier to order parts from the UK than the US.
