Default Steering rack bushes guidance

Eveing all,

I am fitting polybushes to my XJS 5.3 v12 steering rack, the old ones were utterly shot,

The new bushes are about 50 thou thinner on the steel centre pin than the original,

My question is, with standard bushes and therefore polybushes , should there be steel washers on the end of the poly bushes to take up any slack that would exist when putting the bush into the mounting frame ???

I am unable to rely on what was originally fitted as others had had the rack off before I got the car. so I have no reference.

If anybody can guide, I would be grateful.

Thanks

yes, pack it out dead solid , there should be bushes washers or shims,

the stiffer the better to stop any rack movement to improve steering feel and response

the only place on an XJS polly bushes should be used

others may disagree

Default Further guidance

Hi all,

To update a little, I have another query, the wrist pins supplied are smaller in length than the bushes when assembled.

should I pack the centre pin out to the width of the bush, ??some measurements below;

Mounting frame width is 45 mm
Wrist pin length is 39.7 mm
Polybushes width are 42mm

So, should I pack out both the centre pin, and the poly bush to the width of the mounting point ( 45 mm)

Would appreciate any guidance on this subject

Thanks

Yes. Take up all gap between bushings and center pin and the rack mounts.

Taking up all the free play is good but use caution that you're not creating an interference fit. The 'ears' of the subframe can tear away if exposed to too much constant pressure.
