Default Steering rack washers

My rack has been in and out a few times over a number of months before finally being reconditioned properly. I changed one of the bushes for the sports pack version and the other two are the standard jag type. During the course of all the work the washers that are used to pack it out have not been replaced yet. Question is how tightly do the bushes get packed with washers and do the rubber/ metal thrust washers need to be on either side of the bushes? Also can the stiffening bracket be left out? Many thanks for any help as she’s driving like a Spanish galleon at the moment!

You are supposed to use two sport bushings and one standard. The standard bushing is the upper one on the side that has two bushings. The sport bushings should be mounted with the metal flange towards the outside of the car.

All of the gap between the bushing center portion and the mount should be eliminated. Use washerscas necessary The stiffening bracket should be installed with the thick portion towards the top.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply. Will normal washers suffice or do I need the rubber and metal thrust washers as well?

Normal are OK. Use the rubber/metal if you've got them and have room.
