Default Tire Help

I have looked on line for a tire for my 1990 XJS and I can’t find anything but Pirrelli’s that fit the bill. I am trying to avoid a $1200 tire bill. Has anyone found a decent tire that fits the speed rating in the 235/60/15?

Over here anyway, there are none. If you can find some 16 inch rims, then there are loads.

225/55 (I think, I'll check later) will do the job quite nicely; I've got those on the front because I couldn't afford the Pirelli ones (which are still on the back).
Slightly smaller tyres will make your speedo read a bit higher though.

I went to 225/60x15 to get more choices. That's was years ago; not sure what's out there now in that size. The pickins' are getting very slim on performance-oriented tires for 15" wheels

I also used 225s because there is a much broader availability than 235s and a big difference in price.

If you don't plan on going 150 mph I doubt you will notice the difference in sidewall stiffness vs 130 rated

235/60? Not a chance. 225/60, there's a couple. Continental and Falken for a start. I've just put Continentals on the front, which means she's wearing Contis front and back now. Speed ratings are fine, too: W rating, good for 270 kph, which I regularly hit going to the local supermarket.

Those have raised white letters on the sidewall, though. All right for an American muscle car, perhaps....

Just mount 'em blackwall out.

Never tried Coopers but the BFG offering is a good tire; in the 235/60 size it's the BFG rather ordinary standard issue "TA Radial"...not one of BFG's upper-line tires. I've had 2-3 sets over the years. Nothing remarkably good about them, nor anything particularly bad.

Dropping down a size or two isn't a bad idea in at least one respect: better fit on the wheel. The 235s are really a bit too wide for the 6.5" wide lattice wheels. No tire gives its best when it's pinched onto the wheel.

Cheers

Are they symmetrical? Some tyres have different tread patterns across the face. If so, it might not be ideal to just put black-side out.
But I agree with Doug--drop a size or two, say to 225. That's what I have on mine at the moment and they fit perfectly. Continental Premium Contact 2, which get pretty decent reviews: https://www.blackcircles.com/tyres/b...mium-contact-2

BFG Radial TAs are symmetrical and can be mounted RWL out or in. Just had a set mounted and love the look and performance.

I would guess anything dated enough to have white text is going to be symmetrical lol.

Ive had falken ziex 912s for a while that I like a lot for the price. I think they dropped that design to another brand they bought, so now they are sold under "Ohtsu." Either way, decent tire for $80 or so. Also had them on a miata and they stuck well and have a good look.

Yes the BFG's Radial T/A's are symmetrical, and can be turned around black side out, they are not directional either. Hope it helps.
