Tired window motors
Like any old car, my window motors are sluggish, and not surprisingly the driver's side is more tired than the passenger's.
All was well until yesterday when the window would move strongly and flawlessly up until the last three inches or so, and then slow down drastically. Sometimes it just barely makes it up, and sometimes it slows to a stop with an inch to spare. I'm sure the cold plays a part in this
I have lubed the window track with a silicone spray, and my next step is to examine the mechanism, clean it, and re-lubricate it, but I still have the striking suspicion that I'm going to end up replacing it - and that's where I'm running into trouble.
First, I don't know which parts are interchangeable. The description for the Bosch W0133-1611063 recommends it for all models from '76 into the early '90s (it looks like '94 - '96 were a different style) and that it is a direct replacement for the OEM part JLM 11003. The Bosch part appears to be able to be had from about $120 - $270 from a variety of websites I've never used, and used OEM units appear to be available on Amazon (of all places) and eBay for right around the $200 range. Sadly, a junkyard search turned up nothing.
Any suggestions?

Mark,
Interested in your comment that a poor switch can cause a lazy window. You mention that you bought a TWR switch from Terry's Parts. Do you know what the part number was? I was not aware that TWR made anything other than engine parts and body kits for the enhanced XJSs?

Yeah, that seems sort of curious indeed. I can understand if the operation were intermittent or if the window refused to move at all, but the behavior I'm experiencing seems more consistent with a worn motor that can't cope with increasing mechanical resistance.
the later square shaped window winder motors seem to get more tired than the earlier heavy built motors , the earlier ones were black round and much sturdier built than the later ones
from memory the motors and mechanism can be swapped into the latter cars for improved window operation
and even the plugs will fit , i did this alteration to my own car, and it improved the window operation ten fold

I would like to add that the bottom horizontal track, where a strange plastic butterfly shaped piece slides, needs to be greased up as well.
Most people only do the vertical tracks on both sides of the glass.
It's way harder to get to.

How did you do that?
the 3 inch issue is from the liner/seals/guides/felt whatever you want to call them. When they wear out the let the window move around a bit, at around 2-4" is when the angle is the worst, so it locked up right there.
Fix it before it burns your motor up and becomes more expensive, you will have to fix it either way. Mine does it right now with a new motor, I just have to push the window a bit to get it angled right so it can continue back up.

I have no answers on how to fix, but mine are exactly the same, I just put my palm against the window and help push up or down.
One thing I have noticed is my glass wipers are as hard as rock they all need changing, it needs new window seals all round regardless.
One it starts moving it moves ok but getting it moving is the hassle.

Generally they are just really stiffly backed and pop in and out with some effort. I havent really look at the ones on the XJS so im not sure if they have any additional ways of securing them.
Hopefully you don't have the mystery motors if they ever burn up. I switched to the old bigger ones to solve that problem
