I have a 1987 model XJS and it appears that the transducer is kaput. I have pulled and cleaned the connections on the dash speedometer unit. All the gauges work except the speedO.


My thing to replace/check is the transducer unit on the transmission that send the signal to the speedO and the cruise control (that doesn't work either).


What side of the transmission is the transducer located on? Elevating the car is such a hassle I want to get it right the first time. Thanks

 

Left side.

The exhaust pipe might partially obscure it, but you'll find it. More towards the rear of than trans

are you talking about the black plastic box mounted along the fuel pump relays behind the trim panel on the right side? Its about 3" square IIRC.

 

Forget drivers side/passengers side! It just adds confusion.

Left and right is always from the perspective if sitting in the car and looking forward.

If Brad's car has the speedo transducer in the gearbox, it does not have the black box in the boot. This is only there with later cars which have the speedo takeoff in the diff.
Brad, assuming your car does have the gearbox mounted speedo transducer, in this shot the transducer is the thing half out of shot on the RHS of the pic. The thing in the middle is the kickdown solenoid and the LHS thing is the gear-change. The transducer is connected to the loom with a plug, which you will see, and the wires run up into the car through a rubber grommet in the tunnel, accessible once the centre console is out. Check the wires and plug too, I suggest.

Looks like your setup is different to mine, so go by 'What 'Greg' Said'

 

If you have the transmission mounted transducer you won't have a speedometer interface unit....so no need to go looking for one!

If you have the differential mounted speed sensor you DO have a speedometer interface unit.

However......

No matter which type of speedometer system you have, you'll have a fuel injection interface unit....which is similar in appearance. This device melds information from the speedometer circuit and the ECU to give the fuel economy readings on your trip computer

Thanks guys. The picture helps. Got it. Should not be hard to get to now that I know exactly what to look for.


I have a couple of salvage cars I can get a replacement part off of - assuming they do not have the later model style. Both are '88 models. I'd prefer to try and save a few bucks by not having to buy a new unit if possible.
