Default Undercarriage Detailing

I thought I would post a few photos of my recent work. Spent the better part of the last 4 months scraping, cleaning and detailing the undercarriage of my '88 XJS. I am currently doing the same with the rear differential (see other post).

I purchased an exhaust system (with tubular manifolds) and coilover setup from Ben and Harry at Simply Performance. Beautiful stuff! I also recently ordered and am waiting delivery off a manual transmission kit from them too.

Surely you could have got gaz shocks from a U.S. company? Rather than from a breaker.

Other than discovering it was a tedious job and my neck is still sore from looking up at the floor board for months, no. Luckily there was no rust to speak of other than some minor surface corrosion. It was a very satisfying job when all finished though!

Yes, they are sending me the Tremec 5spd. I am very much looking forward to installing it. I will create a post to document the installation.

*Very* Nice!
However, as we all know, Any and All Jaguars leak oil, if for no other reason than to mark their territory (let's not forget Automatic Rust Protection).
How will you deal with this Well Documented Design Feature??

My XJS is no different than others regarding oil leaks. Part of the reason I went as far as I did with this project is because I wanted to resolve a leak in the transmission. One thing lead to another (big surprise). I first dropped the transmission then decided to remove the differential. All with the idea of just freshening things up. While I was at it I figured why not strip the floor? Well it went off the rails from there. I am currently restoring the differential and when that’s done and back in the car I plan on pulling the motor to take care of whatever leaks I find there. Far beyond where I intended to go, but not the first time either. A few years back I bought a ‘67 Impala SS intending to use it as a fun weekend car. The car had a few oil leaks so…

are you rebuilding? I plan on rebuilding/re-gearing mine over winter. Is yours the Dana unit or the Salisbury?

Mine is a Dana. As far as rebuilding it goes I have it torn down to the differential unit itself. I don’t plan on disassembling the ring and pinion because the previous owner had it either rebuilt or replaced with 3.54 gears a while back and the bearings feel quite smooth. I plan on simply detailing everything along with new seals and hardware.

i posted photos of the tags and various numbers off of the unit in an attempt to see in anyone could help me identify if it is original to the car or a replacement but haven’t found out yet. Either way it seems to be in good shape and has the desired 3.54 gears which should work well with the 5 spd.

Ahh, nice. 3.54 still too tall for me, my transmission has a 2.87 1st gear.
