Default Upgrading Exhaust to get more growl

G'day guys. Sorry if this has been covered before.

My question:

What are some common mods you can do to the XJS to get more "growl" out of the exhaust.

A good friend of mine recently upgraded his exhaust on his XJ and it sounded fantastic. I am inspired

I am aiming for something a bit more aggressive but without peeving off the neighbours know what I mean? Not really wanting to upgrade anything under the hood, just more so underneath the car.

What have some of you guys done to yours?

JMO but I think the Jag has better class than to growl loudly.

You can remove the center mufflers and replace them with straight pipes. This will give you more growl. If replacing the exhaust go 2.0 or 2.25". I have 2.5" and I think its a tad too loud

Hi Bro

You can buy a couple of Pipes off ebay, to eliminate the Two Exhaust pipe boxes, in front of the IRS which should give you all the 'Growl' you need.

And although I've been Temped to give them a try

I'm a bit more in the 'Dolce Vita' camp, preferring the purrrrrrr!

Having said that I'm very open minded, as to what the other type would sound like, so maybe someone could put up a Video or an MP3.

I had 2" pipes made to go thru teh rear cradle, not fun.

Then removed the rear monsters totally, TOO noisy, by a LONG shot.

Fitted 18" Hotdog Style resonators to the rear with the branch end pipes.

SWEET.

Mine sounds absolutely fantastic, the crackle on overrun when reved to 6000 is spine tingling,,, BUT its too loud on a long trip, when I get the time I'm going to buy one of those exhaust valves after the first muffler.

Cheers for the responses guys.

So what is the stock size exhaust on the XJS? (under 2" I am assuming)

(I think I need to do some research on the basics of exhaust because I really know jack about it)

Removing mufflers and the like: Other than change the sound, how does this effect performance of your car, for better or worse?
And when upgrading what is the advantage of stainless steel vs normal? (Just looks better and doesn't rust?)

Grant did you still have your muffler when you did your mod or no?

I am so green at this. Which parts (numbers) are you guys meaning to remove or change? (sorry)

I have mid muffler delete, cats cleared out, down pipes empty, "H" pipe aft of the trans, Growler open air cleaners. All that's there is the aft resonators which are straight through, not much difference over stock, not an easy car to get more or good sound out of. Be careful in your choices as you can put a lot of time, $'s and not get what you desire in return.

Cheers bud. I appreciate your reply.

Any chance you could edit your post to include what numbers the parts correspond to the exploded view diagram? That would help heaps. I am still but a learner

Question to those that did the deletions and CAT cleanouts - did you then get the ECU remapped?

I'm contemplating the same exhaust changes on my car but with the possibility of stainless headers and wondered if it would require a remap afterward?

This link has been pretty helpful in helping me understand what is underneath:

Exhaust System Components-5.3 Litre - Parts For XJS from (V)179737 to (V)226645 | Jaguar Heritage Parts UK

heh so when they say "Exhaust Silencer" they mean "muffler" right?

Also what is the OEM size of the exhaust pipes normally? (what I currently have)

Oh dear...just when I thought I was learning more about my car there is a whole other bunch of other stuff I know jack about...

no remap required, it's a pretty simple ECU setup that just requires good O2 sensors. This was my last mod, which was cleaning out the down pipes.

here are my middle pipes that replace the middle silencers/mufflers , they release a few more horses, and make the sound quite a bit more sporty ,

no ECU remap is required as the gains are within the parameters of the current ECU map , only larger TB's would require a remap ,

i use these exhausts along with a new induction kit

Cheers OB. So are we calling these "mid mufflers" to be on the same page?

What is the difference between those and the cylindrical mufflers (13) ?

Wow Brake Buster! Nice Engine man.

Heh what do you mean by TB's?

aj6 engineering sells a larger throttle plate set up but they also will re map your ECU, 1 & 2 would be the mid mufflers, the rear resonators are straight through but are very good at sound deadening.

13 are resonators to reduce the drone, yes remove 1 and 2 or as I have done replace them with straight through mufflers, my mistake was too big a pipe after the muffler 2.5" and straight through resonators.

If I was doing it again I would go 2.5" from the down pipe into 2.5" Cats down to 2.0 or 2.25" muffler and resonator

'Bro' apart from stating the obvious, with regards to the Size and Shape, you wouldn't remove the Rear ones and leave the middle ones in place.

Obviously you could!

But most would really not want to do that, as for starters it would probably be too loud and 'may' even impair the performance by not extracting the gasses in the right way.

As I haven't tried it, I couldn't say for sure but it's not the way most people would go about it.

So much better to do what others have done and remove Items: 1 and 2 and then replace them with a Straight Pipe Kit like B.B. has done, which may also give you a bit more ground Clearance.

That Mod alone, should give you all the 'Growl' you need and in the event you don't like it, then you can re-assemble it, like it was before.

I haven't done that Mod to mine (YET!) but every time I start Her up, the Neighbours Dogs start 'Barking' 'Nuf Said'
