I guess I should clarify my question. Is this possibly one of the Special Editions that are referenced in Kirby's book?

wrong wheels...looks to me like someone fitted the US body kit ( has cut out for US bumpers ) to a 91 car

Has a lot of similarities... Look at my other thread "Looking at adding another kitty" to see an '89 Rouge that seems pretty much correct except for the black wheel paint.

The red piping was what tipped me off. When I see those spoked wheels, I typically assume someone put them on after the fact.

Thanks for the replies thus far. Owner says the car was bought new like this. All I have seen up to now are these pics. One of my customers knows the owner (original) and told me about this this morning. This has everything from the window sticker onward for records. They said the quad tips were part of the effects package.

It really sounds like this just is a quality aftermarket kit. Correct?

Thanks again, Bucky

It was very common for dealers to mount Dayton wire wheels to new cars, and I'm sure many of the original buyers would assume they were from the factory.

I believe the same thing could have occurred with body kits. Remember, that by '91, the XJS Coupe had been on the market since the mid '70's and the new convertibles were getting more attention those last couple of model years before the facelift was approaching in '92.

Dealers were probably doing whatever they could to make the somewhat long-in-the-tooth design more appealing, and get it out of inventory before the facelift models arrived.

Pete

Did you buy your body kit from the supplier you linked and if so how would you rate the kit and the supplier. I asked several months ago if anyone had used the supplier you linked and got no response as was thinking of buying a kit from them but was a little hesitant considering their location and possible difficulty getting resolution if any problems arose from the purchase.

No I didn't. I got it from a friend that bought it years ago and never used it. It will need some tweeking to get to fit correctly but the quality of the pieces is very good.

Swayne, the kit shown is for non US cars, as they don't have the cut out for the US bumpers. Maybe they can make a kit for your car. Or search for Fed. xjs bumper kits.

Thanks for the response. I'm guessing it was for a pre-facelift instead of facelift car hence the tweeking comment.

Not sure what you are referring to but if the bumpers fit the 1/4 panels and or general shape of the car being a paint and bodyman I can work around the difference in fed bumpers. My concern was overall quality of the kit and overall reputation of the company selling the kit. By the time I purchase the kit and pay freight we're talking 15-1700 US dollars hence my concern for quality product and reputable business dealings

I'm not sure that you are understanding what i'm getting at.
If you look at the picture of the above car you will see that the black rubber part of the US bumpers stick out through the kit about 4-6" from the rest of the bumper. This is only on the US cars. If you look at the kit shown on ebay it doesn't have this cut out. You might be able to cut this out or remove the shock absorber behind the bumper and do away with the 5mph crash bumper. There was a thread somewhere about doing that.

So it looks like a Rouge Edition with a Ground Effects kit. That would make it price as any other similar-conditioned XJS.

Is that correct?

I should take a look at this one before I pull the trigger on the other one I have been looking at, because this one is cleaner with records from day one. I am not sure of the asking price at this time.

I have to be honest, Kirby's book scared the C#@p out of me when he said that the v-12 NEEDS to be compression tested rather than driven for the non-v-12 owner because of its ability to hide issues from the unfamiliar (like myself). I am not unfamiliar with engines/ cars in general, but am NOT familiar with the v-12.

The V12 is the same as a V8 or V6...it just has more cylinders.

I think what Kirby was warning about is that folks who are used to driving V8's may not notice if a V12 is a bit out of sorts.

A properly running V12 is VERY smooth. When you are in sitting in the car you should not feel any vibration or lumpiness from the engine. Often, I can be at a traffic light and wonder if the engine is still running!

Many folks are not used to this smoothness and will discount any slightly rough running. A V12 running on 11 cylinders will often feel just fine to people who are used to vibration from an 8 or 6 cylinder engine.

Due to the potential high cost to repair a V12 Kirby recommends a compression check just to make sure that there are no bad valves or rings. If all of the cylinders check out then you have a sound foundation to work with.

Thanks Mark,

It was silky smooth, like my 95 4.0 litre. Both exhausts were steady solid push with no "puffing" like the old Mopar v-8's I am used to.

Other than the high idle, there were no "creepies" from the engine compartment.

The attached video, in one of the posts above, shows the gauges at 35 to 40 minutes.

Alright, the above post was meant for the thread "Looking At Adding Another Kitty" as I have not physically seen the car in this thread yet.

This is what I gather. Aftermarket body kit, wheels, exhaust. Looks nice, but not a rare collectible either.
