Further to my recent post on this thread about my lovely new autobox sump, I had a problem today when I filled it.
i filled it to the lowest mark level on the dipstick bottom ("cold min"). Took the car for a blast and returned and with the engine ticking over tested the level. Only just a bit above the "cold min" and a long way below the hot level mark.
Bunged in another litre and a half of ATF. Revved up car. ATF at the "hot max" level. Then ATF started weeping out (turns out from of the modulator fitting hole). Removed modulator to let some out: ATF POURED out all over the barn floor. Took out enough using the drain plug to get the level down below the top of the sump. At least the extra I put in.
Box functioned perfectly like that. BUT bottom of the dipstick only JUST touching the fluid (1 - 2 mm MAX). In the end I found my tiny bolt hoard and bolted on an inch or so long bit of springy steel to the end of the dipstick to give myself a better more readable level.
So now all well, but I am at an absolute loss to understand why the dipstick level should read so differently. ANyone got any ideas? BB, did you have anything like this when you put on your deep pan?
I have finally made a decision with my dash wood trim. The center piece (a/c vent) stuck like a sore thumb as after several repair attempts (by me and by a pro...) it lacked veneer pattern and it was of a totally different color, just too reddish when compared to the next piece to the right (the SRS piece). I've had this brand new 4-piece set for a while, but I've avoided replacing the set because it implies dealing with the passenger airbag. So, since the existing SRS piece is the best looking one, I decided to just use the a/c vent piece from the new set, as it matches with the SRS piece one heck of a lot better than the outgoing one.
Next was the shifter knob. Not that the existing one doen't look nice, but the new one is the best with that green growler on top; really attractive.
So, here it is:
First to the left shows the flawed a/c vent piece. Next is with the new piece and then two pics of that beautiful shifter knob.

Greg
yes, i had great trouble getting the correct level of ATF after doing all the work and fitting a deep pan sump , though the new sump was supposed to be the same depth as the original ( Jaguar fitted a deep sump on the GM400 as standard ) ,
i put in the recommended amount of ATF and it came no where near the mark , so kept adding till the dipstick was reached in cold, then turned over the engine , and all the fluid disappeared into the torque converter and oil cooler circuit, so had to add even more, and more,
i eventually got it to where it should be and then warmed the car up to running temp , and checked the hot level, i needed to add more fluid, i think the hot level is more critical then the cold one,
so thats how it is at the moment, on the mark when hot, ignored when cold , and she runs perfectly
i think any modifications to these boxes need an acceptance that the fluid levels need to be adjusted , the only mark on the dipstick to take notice of is the high hot mark , everything else will be different
"Possibly fixed" (or maybe just lucky), the rear quarter windows to go down with the top. Moved up and down modules, clean off spades on switch, drank some brown stuff and Viola, it works !!!
To day I bought a Low Profile 2.5 Ton Trolley Jack (£64) which slides straight under the Front Spoiler and Front Beam.
Then Jacks her up to a height of 18 inches, although in the Photo She's been Jacked up to only half that height, for what I would call a Wheel Changing Situation.

It's not easy having two patients to care for, a job which requires a lot more time for no more pay and other issues inbetween...
So I haven't been able to do anything to my Iron Lady except remove some seeds from it yesterday. I feel so bad about having no time to do anything to her. She is standing outside (as the garage is currently blocked with some car rests of my XJ6) and as Rusty, the rotting XJ8, requires some work in order to pass the TÜV, I haven't got any chance to sort her
I got the cruise control to work for the first time today, with a simple clamp on the bellows. Ordered a NEW JAGUAR XJ6 VP XJS CRUISE CONTROL ACTUATOR BELLOWS today.
Finally got around to doing something to my XJ-S today... I gave her a visual inspection if the winter months did any harm. Other than a tad of rust on the brightwork on the rear bumper the car is still as it should be... Shame my 8 years younger XJ8 isn't like that!
Changed the Valve Block on the ABS, which was giving a problem but is now working well.
Completed the Restoration of 'Cherry Blossom' my Red XJS which is nearly ready, to go back on the road and only needs the Rad Re-cored and fitted, together with hoses etc.
But as there were no Rad Shops still open that late, I power sanded down and repainted my Car Lifter.

Started fitting out her side of garage after lining the whole garage in ply, shelving has gone up and some paraphernalia/memorabilia on the walls, then the girl was washed and waxed and the LED dash and console lights finished.
