I've been looking for a product that is used to coat manifolds etc (know it exists can't remember the name) - not sure it is worth the bother though. Looking at the cables in that area they are cloth covered - if these cables are simple PVC sheathed then it is too hot in that area for those for sure so they'll likely be brittle - there was no flex left in the injector harnes so they'll be worse I reckon.
Coat manifolds??

Are you thinking of ceramic coating? I plan to do the whole top end of my car eventually. From air box/intake right to cam covers in ceramic heat reflective coating

Ceramic is indeed what I'm considering, I'm still figuring it out - costs etc. I don't believe the self applied stuff is worthwhile - but I'm researching. If you have any info / leads I'm all ears (although I don't plan to send my manifolds to Canada )

I just blew over £1k on a replacement subframe (and a pretty thing it is too) - so now I need to buy even more 'stuff' to get the powder coat off as it is compromised in places, sand blast barely touches it,

Consaidering burning it off now but this thing is getting stripped, it will be etch primed (potentially using Bilt Hamber Electrox instead) then I'll use a simple paint such as hammerite that I can keep touched up, all cavity and seem areas will be flooded with Waxoyl (actually more likely that I'll use Bilt Hamber Dynax S50). I'll be hoping for a nice sunny day so I can get the entire subframe toasty prior to application.

I'm stuck with the conflict that I want this car back on its wheels before winter returns (if it ever leaves) but I don't want to be taking this subframe off again so all the jobs made easier by its absence just became a priority. The entire exhaust is off the car, the manifolds look easy enoguh to drop off with no subframe in the way so I guess it all depends how much I can get them coated for and whether any machining is required. I have already aqquablasted the inlets - have new seals / spindle bushings and 'stuff' for those (throttle bodies already built and set up), I just need to polish them up, they're not necessary to get the wheels back on so they're parked at the moment.

I feel sorry for those with cars in worse condition for they know not what awaits (well to do the job right of course), I stopped recording the costs when I passed £4k, I decided after reading on here not to go with the ball joints etc I bought from SNG - I have now obtained Lemforder stuff, OEM bushes for wishbones and Poly for everything else, I've also bought new nuts botls and other sundries - quite amazing how the costs stack up. Current predictions show me putting 20k into this car by the time I sort paint and interior - scary stuff.

Money well spent Ben!
For the inside of the subframe I very strongly recommend this stuff to be sprayed in, first one way up and them the other:
https://aquasteel.co.uk/

Then wax over that. I did my entire car with a probe sprayer in 2010 (all box sections, chassis sections, into the wheelarch double skin between the boot and the passenger compartment, under the back seat, top and bottom engine bay chassis rails) and I have had no rust again anywhere.
As another tip, when you do the front shock absorber strengtheners, ensure you seal all along the gap/join between them and the inner wing. It is water getting behind the strengthener that rusts out he wing metal.

Thanks Greg - I'll put that on the shopping list and get some.

This is the stuff I was going to use from Bilt Hamber >> Electrox

If I use Aquasteel and then this that should be enough and shouldn't require an etch primer, I do plan to spray into the cavities but I also plan to be excessive and flood them - until it runs out of every crevice not only both sides up but also ends up too (so horizontal and vertical), - would be nice if I had some kind of rotisserie to do this on - just can't be **** making one but I plan this strategy for every coating and the final wax.

I've had POR15 recommended by others but it isn't a product I'd recommend, nor is it one that my OCD will tolerate - it WILL separate from the metal that isn't rusty and it will still look great - whilst concealing a rust factory underneath (and if I'm honest I don't htink that it looks that great either - paint over rust indeed ...)

Replaced my Mass Air Flow Sensor to address sluggish acceleration. Seemed to do the trick!

What did I do today? I sold her...

Yes, I won't be breaking her up. The new owner will. Sold it for a quite good price (about what I paid for it 8 years ago, without inflation). Considering it doesn't run and isn't even assembled, it is fine for me. So, just got to wait for the new owner to pick it up... Then it is heading south to Bavaria!

Hej Damien,
sorry for you to sell your baby - nice for me and good for my ´89 v12 convertible.
See you soon my friend to pick the car up.
But... I´m from Berlin - nix Bavaria.

Cheers,
Tom

Hey Tom,

Nice to read you here. I know youre from Bavaria, check the date of my post That was the previous buyer who decided to insult me later instead of buying the car...

I look forward to seeing more of my former car - at least in pieces.

Bogged body work...
Actually, there were some things I found in that space between the outer section and that shelf in the rear corner of the boot I have questions about. I'll make a thread I guess. Hoses and vent looking things with rubber elbows and such. Was where my worst rust was. Drains of some kind...?

Should have taken photos, but I was in such a panic, on holiday, and started digging into that lower rear corner and the rust just kept going and going. What a thing!!!

Decided to replace headlamp bulbs with LEDs, and discovered that those clips (AAU1312 / /AAU1313 ) are broken and headlamp is held by plastic cover. Couldn't find replacement parts (except jewelry-grade on UK ebay). So I did some "magic putty" sculpting. Hope it will hold until I find real parts :-)

There are printed parts available that replace these, they ain't perfect but these need to be flexible, you just need to dismantle. I have a set but spent even more on some jewellery - I bought 6 NOS ones - 2 lowers and the 4 normals - just lets say don't tell the missus.

This will take you to the ebay seller I got my printed ones from Headlight Clips

Thank you! Saw this one... "This seller doesn't offer international postage." I even ordered full brackets from someone - turned out to be scam. Had to file for refund...

OK drop me a PM with where you are and I'll see what the costs are to post, I do have 6 of these so we may be able to reach an agreement

Edit : It isn't that expensive really and prices don't seem to be area specific - £9.45 - would be the cost international tracked / signed to ship -

Today my "Pioneer AVH-Z7200DAB CD/DVD/MP3-Autoradio Touchscreen DAB Bluetooth USB iPod Apple Carplay" arrived. According to "Sound Garage" it should fit with its motorized panel in our XJS. Looking forward to drive navigated...

coindigger,

Really interested to see that Pioneer unit. Hope it works out. I know many owners have had problems trying to fit flip screen units in XJSs.

Good luck

Paul

Yesterday I did oil change and while filter was out replaced oil pressure sensor. Used long screwdriver and hummer to unscrew old one, and after multiple tries managed to get my hand to the spot. I didn't think it was possible to get a wrench to it without bending it - but somehow managed! No more crazy jumping of oil pressure needle! :-)
