Default White wall tires, acceptable sizes?

Hey guys! I recently sold my Dayton wire wheels of my Pre-HE XJ-S and picking up 15" Lattice wheels this Thursday. I was thinking about getting the 16" Lattice, but decided to go for the 15" with White Wall tyres for a more classic look. I've looked around on different forums and websites (including this one), but it seems more tire sizes are possible to fit these wheels. I found a thread that says 225/60, but others say 235/70. Anything lower than 70 is quite difficult to find for a White Wall, so would a 235/75 be too big? I don't want to change the rolling diameter either... Can anyone shine any light on this? Thanks!

Tyre sizes I see listed are either 215/70 or 235/60. If you fit 235/75 your wheel revolutions per minute will be incorrect - the way this works is the second number is the wall height percentage of the tyre width.

I don't know that the Jaguar XJS ever came with white walls from the factory - at least in Europe can't say for the US.

Standard size on a pre_HE was 205/70x15 which would have a diameter of about 26".

The 235/75x15 would be much taller, about 29", and would look very out of place on your XJS, IMO. This size is what you'd see on old Cadillacs and Lincolns, and some light duty trucks.

The pre-HE cars for the USA were indeed available with whitewall tires. They might've been standard issue. But it was a very narrow whitewall, about 10mm or so. Better described as a white stripe.

You can still buy similar tires today from specialty suppliers

TheDrivingDutchman,

Wheels and tyres will always be a very personal choice, so you'll always get conflicting views, particularly from those of us in the UK who have a view of how we feel our XJS should look!

With the rarity of pre-HEs, put a beautiful set of original Kent alloys with 205/70 tyres, the way Jaguar intended, and everyone will love it!

But hey, that's just my opinion!!

Good luck with your choice!

Paul

Thanks for the replies everyone! I'm glad to hear that it comes down to personal preference, and not to one fixed size. Will be ordering soon, first the Lattice wheels need some refurbishment...

I'll keep you posted!

The driver's guide for my '95 XJS says either 225/60r16 or 225/55r16. Looking at Tire Rack, there seem to be a lot more 225/55r16 options. What are the advantages of one over the other?

flyingphil,

This thread of TheDrivingDutchman is about whitewall tyres, which as we know, is a very personal choice! If you just want to seek opinion on 16" tyre sizes, it would be appropriate to start a new thread.

Cheers
