2007 XK ashtray cover
More-so than the 2010 and later as the shifter knob must be removed so the trim panels can be CAREFULLY removed with a suitable trim tool.
There are a few good threads about shifter knobs and console trim removal, and at least one on the ashtray lid.
Use the Search! It's usually helpful.

The console does need to be removed to get to the ashtray components, did that some number of years ago to fix mine. Best to see the steps in the workshop manual, rather than trying to remember and repeat them here.
I don't 'remember' anything as I've never done it, especially on a knobby shifter car. Makes sense to me to have the shifter surround removed instead of working around it. That'd make it easier to remove everything else below that instead of fishing stuff around through holes and such.
If'n I had to do it, I'd certainly remove Mr. Knobby.

You have to lift out the center console, and the ashtray comes with it. The gear shift unit stays put (I think you need to shift the gear lever to N in order to provide clearance to lift out the console).
