Not so long ago, Jaguar had problems with their cars being stolen because the keyfobs were so quickly and easily cloned. To prevent this, Jaguar created a diabolical new design that made it impossible for thieves to quickly and easily clone the key and steal the car. Unfortunately, that also made it expensive for owners to replace a key. No problem, just more profits for your dealer.

From the factory each X150 Smartkey is electronically paired with modules in the car. If that Smartkey is separated from the car with which it was born, it becomes an orphan. That orphaned Smartkey must first be electronically divorced from its parent before it can be reprogrammed and paired with another X150 for it to be fully functional. Both key and car must be present to simultaneously program and pair their modules with the proprietary Jaguar SDD tool.

Yes, a used Smartkey from another X150 can be reprogrammed. I know that for a fact because I bought one on Ebay and had it done.

Thanks for the replies,

The seller told me it has been released from the previous car
and if it does not work I can return it.

Any tips for using SDD to add this key and remove a key?
(I have one working key)

Did you ever add your key? If so, do you know what the sequence is - I am thinking of getting the SDD to add a new key to my 2011 XKR as I only have 1 key

"Getting the SDD".............. yeah, it's a lot more involved than just 'getting' it.
The Mongoose cable is a few hundred $$$, a dedicated Windows 7 Laptop another hundred or so, the 40 Amp battery power is at least $100, and then there's the program itself, which could cost a few hundred. THEN, if you do it 'legit', you will also need a subscription of sorts to I think TOPIX to have it update all the time. Not necessary, per se, but it is what it is.

Was looking at the SDD offering from britishdiagnostics.co.uk - their kit is about $100 and comes with a cable and I believe works with windows 10 - so additional cost would also be the 40amp battery power. So - if anyone what the sequence is, that would be really helpful - or is it simple to do without instructions?

Yep, and harbor freight sells usable drill bits also. "koff-koff"
I'd not let the stuff you referenced within the same continent as my car. When JUST THE CABLE costs $200-400, what kind of cable would you expect to get for $10? Many people have bricked their cars using junk stuff. Course, many have NOT bricked also, so give it a shot!
Let me know how it works out.

Not that hard, I've done it,

SDD only required backup power for flashing modules
keys is fast and doesn't need power provided your battery
Is in good shape.

I bought a used key and programmed it, works fine however
does not work when inserted in the slot.

Yuck, you want the new cheap key FOB? The original one looks much richer and elegant and you can even put a coat on it to keep it warm.

Note this is a spare key, I used the original master key as my daily key, but I have a spare
incase something happends to this key.

Also on 2010 XK\ I have never been asked to insert the key into slot and Ive owned this
car 5 years already.

Well, perhaps easy after you've done it a couple times. It's easy to open and change out the battery, but I find reassembly a bit tedious. The release slider and spring tends to jump out of place as the other half of the fob is being dropped into place. I'm getting the hang of it now, after doing it twice.

It's a totally different beast, normal programming will not work. Both the car and key need to be programmed to Each Other, not the key to car.

You will most likely need to have the car towed to a dealer and have them make you new key FOB's. Also tell the guy who "made you a new FOB" that he bricked both FOB's and should pay the dealer to get new ones. These are not your standard key FOB's. Good luck

^^^^ What he said. Also, read my Post #21, above.

That auto locksmith caused your Smartkey fobs to be unpaired (orphaned) from your 2007 XK. It's like a mother (XK) who can't find her children (fobs). They can be reunited, but it takes the proprietary Jaguar software to do it and both car and keys must be together to do so. Your Jaguar dealer can do it (as well as experienced indie Jaguar mechanics with the software). You probably don't need to buy new keys unless yours were damaged by that locksmith.

Have you tried the old key in the center console slot?
