Default 2011 XKR Metal Clanking from Engine

Hi guys,

Before I take my cat to the mechanic and spend big $$$ maybe you can help me... my car has 70k miles, and in last few days I noticed strange noise coming from engine, while running, tried cold start, warm it up, A/C on/off, turning wheel while engine running, but the noise stays the same. I decided to stop driving it to prevent any damage.

here is video sample of the noise.

There was a video a while back of a guy buying a used Jag with what the seller said was an engine knock. Ended up being a very inexpensive and easily replaced part on the Supercharger. I'll see if I can find the video and post it.

Here you go. Sounds exactly like your video:

I linked to the timestamp in the video with the sound, but maybe watch the whole thing for full info.

The supercharger coupler itself is cheap but the labour to swap it out is not. You can DIY at home if you're handy but its still a good amount of work.

Thank you!, I'm sure it will take me longer to find needed tools in my step-father's garage than to fix the engine !

Hello Peter,

Sounds very similar to the prroblem I had with my 2010 XKR - turned out to be the notorious water pump bearing failure (( could see the pulley wobbling really badly when the noise started - the car had only covered 34,000 miles at the time). Stand on the right hand side of the car and look between the hoses - you should be able to see the water pump pulley.with engine running Sometimes these noises, although very frightening, can turn out to be something external. Good luck !

Watch this thread on removing the S/C. Videos are excellent.

I had a horrible notice with my XK8. I was told it was the water pump. Turned out to be a lose pully. Just tighten 3 bolts, fixed it. Be sure to check the simple stuff like that before dropping any money. Learn from my mistake. Good Luck.

Here is update guys, It turned out that the water pump was making that noise, the pulley seems to be loose and hitting the engine block although it was not leaking coolant..... i don't think it can be tightened as there is only one bolt on the water pump pulley, correct me if I'm wrong .....

Im located in USA, where should i get water pump from?
should i go with OEM or aftermarket?
anything else should I order or replaced while I'm there?

Thank you !

Looks like you can get OEM for about $200-$250. I'd go that route. Kind of crazy considering I spent $380 on a damn small piece of plastic interior trim piece...

Here is your part:

https://parts.harperjaguar.com/oem-p...embly-aj813909

The local dealer was ridiculous, so I bought my mirror cover from this same dealer. Shipping was fast and had no issues. I was a bit leary about buying online, but they came through great!

You are having 5.0 s/c, correct? If it's early model you will have a longer list of parts to replace assuming you want to have the latest iteration of a water pump.

For sure you need these two:
- C2Z18658
- AJ811539

As far as I remember upgrade/update of water system requires:
- C2Z26930
- LR049989 (cannot find Jag number, but this one is the same as in Jag)

Also changing thermostat to water pump hose might not be a stupid thing (again LR code: LR033994)

Hope it helps.

Using LR parts is a form of money saving (at least in Europe)

And all you need is available both in Jag and LR

I just saw this thread and was going to suggest the water pump because I had a similar but even more pronounced noise coming from mine several years ago and was sure it was coming from the supercharger, but it turned out the water pump was wobbling so much it was knocking on the engine. But don't think you're done, I've had five water pumps on my 2010 XKR.

Did you use OEM waterpump or aftermarket?

I believe OEM, tight squeeze and didn't want any surprises.
