Default 2014XK-R or 2013 MB 550SL?

Looking at a CPO 2013 Sl550 or a new 2014 Jaguar XK-R. I like the performance and reliability of the MB but would also like to try a supercharged Jag before I die. I think that Jag reliability has become better though I have read some reports that there still might be hiccups. Also I bet that resale will be weaker on the Jag.

I know there might be a slant on here but there also might be people that have looked at both.

Opinions?

I have had both brands- Mercedes has the edge on longevity and prestige, but Merc can't touch a Jag in terms of panache and overall feel.

Looks like you are in the wrong forum for the X150 XKR, but why not have one of each.

I may buy one of each, but not for another 10 years or so.

Welcome to the forum Mulepick,

I've moved your question from XK8/XKR 1997-2006 to XK/XKR 2006 onwards forum. Members here with the model you are considering will certainly have opinions!

Mercedes - park it next to the other one... They can look nice in the right colors, but they don't do much for me. I am not convinced they will last longer or be less expensive to own once the warranty is over.

I have a 2013 SLK55 AMG and a 2013 XKR. I have no loyalty to brand, but IMO the Jaguar is the better car. Why? Much better performance, just as reliable or more so, and looks so good.

I'm strong jaguar fan as can be seen in the list below. I have also owned Mercedes. regarding reliability they are about the same. Once you have driven a Jaguar for an extended period of time you get hooked. Why? There is no other car on the market that feels and drives like a Jaguar, it supple, luxurious and has a distinctive style all its own.

My suggestion; if you can find rental cars similar to what you are looking for rent each one for a day or two and then make your decision. You won't be sorry with either, but, as said before the Jaguar is very special.

After properly driving them both (as I did) ask yourself which one:

Gave you the bigger grin
Drove like a dream
Sounded like automotive Nirvana
Made you want to climb right back in
Continues to draw your gaze longer
And made you post on the Jaguar forum...

I think you know the answer...

Welcome to the Club!

Jag is an experience and Mercedes is an appliance. You really need to get into the AMG range to compare but even then... it will never be as special.

You might get mistaken for an accord or a Korean car in the MB btw...

As a recovering Mercedes owner, and a long-time Jaguar owner I can say that the quality of modern Jaguars is easily as good - no wait,... much better than the quality of Mercedes (or BMW or Audi...); the Jaguars have more style, are more luxurious, are more exclusive, make you smile, increase your testosterone level, easily get you speeding tickets...and when you park a Jaguar you ALWAYS, always turn back to look at it. 'nuff said.

The new Eclass is not as good as the outgoing... The new S and C classes build quality are fantastic. The Jag has more personality, just make sure you have support locally, my dealer is a shyster.

The Benzes are a dime a dozen. Well, maybe not a dime, but you get the point. I've owned both, myself, although my Benz model was not the one you are considering. It was a V8 E class, though. Nice car. Rock solid.

The 5 liter XKR is a great car. Not very many on the road. Gorgeous and fast. Mine has been rock solid as well.

I have a 2013 SL550 and the 2013 XKR coupe. Although both are great cars, I love the Jaguar XKR. As many have already stated, resale is better on the SL, but you should never buy a car for the resale value. You buy it because you enjoy driving it. Good luck.
