Default 5.0 xkr engine whine

Hey, all,

Just after some ideas to help investigation. Recently had water pump, thermostat, aux pump, all radiators, and smaller supercharger pulley changed.

The car now makes a whine at idle, increasing with revs (I'll try get a video up). Anyone had this before, any ideas?

Local jag specialist kindly listened to the video but didn't think it sounded like the supercharger. Will be taking it to him after I've ruled out any of the simpler stuff.

Cheers,
Tom

That noise didn't happen until after you had all that work done, so that's the likely cause.

There are 5 possibilities since the noise varies with RPMs: (1) belt squeal; (2) belt tensioner; (3) pulley bearings; (4) alternator bearings; or (5) water pump bearings. Take it back to the technician who did the work and tell him to use an automotive stethoscope to pinpoint the source and fix it.

Good luck!

Thanks, Stuart. Will certainly be doing that. Hoping and praying it's not the SC as it'd be a pain to have to pull that off and send for a refurb.

Defo not SC noise as that's more a rattling/ticking at all RPM if bearings/coupler or SC low on oil.

From the sound I'd suspect what Stuart has summarised, too coincidental for it to be unrelated.

Three observations, namely:

1) You said "and smaller supercharger pulley changed" that indicates you had a smaller pulley changed to a smaller or original pulley, when I suspect you mean a standard pulley change to a smaller.
2) PLEASE add you country, MY and mods to your signature strip, it stops people having to guess, I believe I've mentioned this to you before.
3) Name the 'specialist' concerned.

Standard pulley changed to smaller; you're correct.

Hopefully my location is now visible.

The Jag Specialist in Doncaster kindly listened to the video.

Had a play around today and it definitely seems to be from the SC. Will book in with a specialist and see what the damage is. Doh

Hmmm interesting as my coupler was damaged, also the oil (when refilled) was 50% down, there was bearing noise but that seems to have gone away as they're now properly lubed.

But neither of these manifested in that type of noise.

Remember I'll be 6hrs labour to remove and refit, plus you'll have all of the gaskets and hoses, if it is bearings then most places will have to send the unit away to somewhere like Powerhouse.ave the expertise, so I'd get them to listen to the car:

https://www.powerhouse.uk/content/co...-yorkshire.php

So that'll be circa £1k+ the SC rebuild charge if required

I'm with markyuk and sterwat with all the accessory work you had done, guessing some plastic is misaligned and hitting a pulley or belt.

I thought it'd be around that price so no surprises (unless it's something more sinister).

Just one of those things. Will be worth it if I have a good reliable car after (for the 2k or so it does a year ha)

Could well be though to be safe I'd rather it be at a specialist now as I can't work it out, and sound is definitely from the SC area. I'd prefer it be at the right place should something more specialist need doing. Oh well.

Taken to The Jag Specialist in Doncaster and diagnosed as damaged bearings in the SC snout.

New snout and oil changed and all running well again. Also asked for the symposer to be removed so oil can be changed in situ in future but need to check it's been done.

Highly reccomend The Jag Specialist!
