Default Airbag Light On

This is a continuation of the thread 'Airbag light on and no response with Navigation' which was considered Resolved once the navigation problem was sorted.

I took the car into a local general workshop and they put their box of tricks on the car and found the problem. I didn't get the code number from them but I was told that the problem originated in the passenger seat belt tensioner and was likely to be a loose connection. The light was reset. I think the fault may have come up prior my taking delivery of the car and while the previous, somewhat tired, battery was in use. Anyway we'll see what transpires in the coming weeks. The next problem is easy, though costly. 8 year old tyres to be replaced with Michelins next week.

Please have them give you the code and post here until you're certain it's resolved.

Default Fault code

It's too late. The guy spent 10 minutes on the job, didn't record anything and can't remember which is not surprising. It's only a small local garage who did not even give me a bill, This is rural Spain.
Sorry.

I would suggest to start looking for a new tensioner. Had the same thing and need to replace one. No more codes afterwards.

OK thanks. I asked for codes because wasn't sure if you mechanic said tensioner or pretensioner. Does the belt retract slowly, is it "loose"? Have you tried pulling it out fully to make sure it isn't twisted? I would consider that and also give the belt a good cleaning. If that doesn't work, yes replacing would be the option.

In my case this was the second part (where you put the belt) /sorry for lack of proper English/

Where is the tensioner located, in the reel or the buckle (the part next to the transmission tunnel) or is there one in each? I'm interested so that I can sort out a supplier just in case.

In reply to Sean, the problem seems to be fixed although time will tell. I saw the technician pulling the belt out a few times during his checks but I have tried it myself and all seems good to me. I'll give it a clean anyway when I next wash the car. Unfortunately my Spanish isn't good enough to pick up the difference between tensioner and pretensioner particularly in the Andalucian dialect. I do suspect the old battery though. It would start the car after being on the Ctek but after a day or two the voltage was well below 12v so not retaining the charge. Now there is a nice new Varta in place with the Ctek permanently wired in.

@Sailor Mike the pretensioner is the receptacle on the trans tunnel side and there are pyrotechnics involved. Pretensioner's tend to fail before tensioners (my two cents) as they fill with crud over time. If the belt is moving freely and retracting with good return spring, it could be either side. At any rate and take it for what it's worth, these parts are best just replaced. I'm pretty sure the tensioner has no repairable parts sold separately. You have to replace the unit. Same with the pretensioner and for safety reasons, replacement for me is the only option. I wouldn't be adverse to buying used on eBay myself but that's a judgement call and having only the information you gave, I would start by replacing the pretensioner.
