Default The annoying tick/click

Hi all, have posted here a few times over the past year about a persistent and very annoying and audible click that I hear. Very persistent on start up from cold every 10-15 seconds and definitely evident when foot initially pressed on the throttle (although it does it also if idle) that gets better but does not go away once fully warmed up. Have isolated the noise as coming from beneath the black tubey affair in the photo attached. Anything you can suggest (if live with it, so be it) I would appreciate.

That is your 4.2L intake manifold. Your description is extremely general. Can you post an audio clip of what you are hearing. Also, try using an automotive stethoscope to pin point the source (a screw driver to the ear is a cheap substitute but not as safe to use).

Thanks for response. Will record tomorrow. Noise replicates when warm and engine off. Assume therefore it’s metal expansion/contraction?? Will post tomorrow.

Hi. Sorry for delay. Noise attached on video. This noise occurs prominently when cold but continues when warm (but not as frequently)

Couldn't hear much, sorry. Longer clip maybe?

Does its speed change with engine revs?

Hi, had to keep the clip short as had to keep file size under 5MB

No change in revs - it is def a metallic contraction expansion issue that is occurring beneath the inlet manifold. Frustrating part is that the noise is evident when driving - particularly from cold start.

As JagV8 said it is too short to really tell. Again, try removing the engine cover and touch the tip of a long screw driver (with the handle end on your ear) at various points around/on the intake assembly to pin point a source. The sound should be most pronounced nearest the source then you may be able to determine or speculate its cause.

Perhaps then use your photo from #1 to illutrate where you found it coming from.

My 2005 XJR makes exactly the same noise and has done ever since I have had it.

I have assumed it is the clutch on my air conditioning compressor.

I cannot hear it when I am inside the car.

Your AC compressor is a variable displacement type that runs all of the time so it does not have a clutch to cycle on and off.

After listening to that and reading your original post (there are hints there)...my wild guess is some sort of electric throttle calibration issue.

Cheers,

Dave

Fuel Injectors, and lifters plus valves are all gonna make them ticking noises. Mine does it too.

I assume you mean the 2 loud ticks. Does sound like a clutch or solenoid either something that is opening or closing quickly. The other noise is typical injector noise. With the bonnet open I hear the same injector noise and with it closed it is a faint sound. Now if you want noise you should have heard my 63 Corvette 327 cu in 340 hp with solid lifters.

I was thinking of the two clicks which does sound luck a clutch or solenoid engaging/disengaging.
