Default Audio gone crazy

Today the audio system took on a mind of its own, the satellite was trying to update and at some point channel got hung up. Would not do anything for changes and controls were acting strange. When I turned off ignition, audio kept playing, could find no way to turn off, was getting ready to pull fuses, but decided to just lock vehicle and see what happened. Audio kept playing, but after short while, shut down.
when I started again, all seemed OK.
Any ideas? Did the update software cause a strange click and then got reset, leaves one with uneasy feeling, my XKR is 2008 and I have used as a daily driver in good weather for last 12 years, my AM does not currently function but I am not AM user, thinking my splitter may be bad,
This was very strange!

Bummer. Maybe I’ll take her for a spin now and see if there’s a sirius update available.
I wonder if it could be as simple as the on board memory is maxxed out. Hmmm.

Well I’ll be…

Took the car to the car wash.
sirius update started.
Then all my audio crapped out.
Try turning on and off and nothing.

Got to the car wash. Turned off the car. Got out. Locked and unlocked it. Then got back in.

And she’s back to behaving properly.
On my return home I’ll look for thrown codes.

She’s 12.6 now. I will check in the morning.

Nope…. that isn’t it. No codes either.

Is it possible that the Sirius update is the problem? If it's a code update, these are old hardware -- could be the update is loading code built for a different unit or different year, or loading something because your year is obsolete. Reach out to sirius tech support and find out the status of you hardware support.

Or is the "update" just the satellite search it normally does? In which case the hardware or antenna may be flaky. Pull the unit in the trunk and reseat all the connectors after spraying the with a bit of electronic contact cleaner. And, of course, don't spray the MOST connector....

We don't have such things in Europe.
We Have DAB+ ( Digital Audio Broadcast) and it's free. It's supposed to replace the old Hertzian radio network.

My guess would be that your Sirius radio is not getting consistent reception and when it starts its station update it can’t finish it. Station updates are not uncommon and managed carefully by Sirius … I would say there is newr zero chance this is an error by Sirius.

Best plan I think would be to park the car somewhere with a good open view of the sky, start it, and see if Sirus starts >and finishes< this pesky update.

The theory of an antenna problem is reasonable but there are several connectors between the antenna and the Sirius module in the stack in the trunk that are equally possible sources of failure. And of course the module itself could be going bad. Tracking down the error might best start with swapping the SDARS (satellite digital audio radio system) module. I have some swappable parts I could send you to assess this if you PM me.

You indicated AM was bad … that is not unusual I had to replace my AM/FM HD Radio module (called the IBOC - in band on channel - in reference to the technology used by digital radio) to fix that problem…but IBOC is a separate box from the SDARS tuner. So not related.

Good thinking but not the case. My reception is perfect. Typically, the update is not software but an metafile containing a catalog in which new channels are uploaded and satellite connection meta data is undated.
No, I'm still of the mindset that a memory limit was exceeded.

Not a problem this time though. Turn off audio, Stop, Shutdown, Lock, Unlock, Startup, Turn on Audio; seems to have worked fine.

Cool

I experienced once, about a year ago, a comparable incident with my latest XKR. In Austria, all of a sudden the audio “decided” to up and down regulate volume. Terrible during the upregulating phase… I stopped, but it continued even after switching off the ignition. So I locked the car, and it shut up. When restarting, the same happened again, immediately. So I stopped again, and left the car sit locked forabout 10 minutes. Thereafter, the phenomenom never returned.

(Just to be sure: the battery can be ruled out as the cause.)

Still scratching my head that you no longer have a BRG Plus 8

Has any of the haunted radio victims tried a hard reset and an overnight (or more)unplugged battery ?
that might help.
