Default Brake noise - can I say "fart" on this forum?

My brakes make a noise that sounds like a little fart milliseconds before they complete a stop. I videoed it going forwards and backwards.

They have always done this in the 10 months that I have owned the car. It seems to be worse if I have just cleaned the wheels, perhaps getting the rotors wet? And the only time I've noticed that it goes away is when I've driven the car pretty hard for a while. Perhaps brake dust accumulation? Perhaps heat?

I asked the dealer about it the last time it was in for service, and he said it was just a normal rubbing noise and rubbed his fingers on the glass to demonstrate the concept. I got it. I guess that is what it sounds like, but none of my other cars have done it. Is there something different about these brake pads? By the way, both the pads and rotors were fine, and had plenty of life left in them when last checked.

I'm actually pleased to see from the video that it's not as loud from the outside as it is from the inside. Inside the car it sounds much louder.

PS: I know about the TSB and the clicking issues with pins and the like, but this seems different.

I think this is normal. Possibly contaminated rotors/pads? If you get that [EDIT] wheel [/EDIT] cleaner on the pads/rotors, it will definitely cause them to grab differently. Just drive harder and burn the residue off!

So many different squeaks and creeks in my pads... I asked a fellow XKRS owner he said "racing brakes" are very noisy by nature. I live with it.

I would not think that the XKRS or any street car would come with racing brakes. Under that I mean the pads. They would probably wear your rotors off in a little more than 1000 miles. I tried it once and while it was spectacular for people to watch the brake-fire show in the dark, as well as providing some mean stops that wanted to send me through the windshield, I quickly switched back to regular hi-po street pads, not wishing to change rotors every month.

And, yes, many racing brake pads would be very noisy; they sound like a big grinder wheel against metal, which is what they supposed to be.

I listened to the video multiple times. While I can not identify the source for the noise I would venture to say that it is NOT normal. It sounds like a binding sound. I could be a slightly loose caliper or brake pads somehow moving around inside the caliper. Is it only on a single wheel or all 4?

I would request from the dealer to check all brakes for bolts being tight and if nothing loose found, lubricate the back of the pads and see if that eliminates the sound.

Good luck,

Albert

I don't know the answer to your question. I will have to get down there while someone moves it to listen. I will let you know.

Almost sounds like the sound my tires make when I am stopping on a epoxy coated surface.

I have this same issue on my XF. Repair shop said ( to my wife ) it's about a $2K fix, not related to the brakes. What?

So now I'm on here trying to find the answer to the same question as the OP.

So maybe I'm not crazy. I totally forgot to mention that when I did take it in they replaced the front spring isolators (under warranty), but it didn't seem to help at all. I've just lived with it since. I still haven't checked to see if it's more one wheel than another.

Something is not right. Take it to the dealer and have them fix it before your warranty runs out. That would definitely bother me. I would not live with it. If my car made that noise, and the dealer told me to live with it, I would have a ****-fit at the dealer. They know better than to tell me to live with it. Let us know what happens--I'm interested in your outcome and what the dealer is going to do for you. Before I bought my 2013 I followed Lothar52's chirp problem and put my next Jaguar purchase on the line. I would have never bought my 2013 or any other Jaguar if they never fixed Lothar52's problem to his satisfaction.

It'd be interesting to see what it sounded like without the motor running. But pretty sure mine doesn't make that noise...

Anything disturbing our luxurious peace within our cars would be worth asking about. I'd want it to go away. I'd like to think amcdonal86's suggestion works!

I know this thread is old, year and a half or so, but wondering if this was ever resolved. I listened to noise, and can't tell if it is the same as mine. With my 2004 XK8, when I stop, just prior to the point of a full stop, my brakes sort of vibrate, which I don't think is too unusual, but they do it longer and more pronounced/louder than any other car I have had. You know when you are stopped and barely have your foot on the brake pedal, and the car sort of creeps a few inches, it is that noise and feel. Well anyow, I have had this issue for 50k miles, even after new rotors and pads. I just thought it was normal. Last week, totally unrelated, I replaced my shocks, as the lower shock bushings were worn, and have been for a long time, I just never got to it. So after I replaced the shocks, this issue is 98% eliminated, except for a very very slight and innocuous noise Barkley perceptible - sometimes. I did the shock replacement myself. I also replaced the inner and out tie rods and steering rack boots. So all I can say is I think these parts are a factor, and if anything, the shocks, as the tie rods were replaced only due to one inner tie rod being bent. I can't understand why this fixed it.

Thanks for the input. It still makes the noise, although to tell you the truth I had all but forgotten about it. 20,000 miles now on the original pads and rotors. Your experience with new tie rods and shocks is very interesting. I wonder if it's the same thing.
