This thread is fun for me to read, as someone who flies out to buy cars like these sight unseen from Craigslist and Facebook marketplace. Never had an issue yet lol.
The key for me is to get a great enough price with buffer to fix any issues I might find.
I used the Google, didn't use Topix as Topix doesn't show what I was looking for. Neither does the VIN Decoder in this forum.. I wanted to see dealers and locations and any other data I could find in those regards. I did NOT expect to see so many "Bad VIN" items to show up. I've done it many, many times in the past and never got those results.
Those bad Vin sites are just manipulating Google to scare you into buying a report from them.
One concern is that Item 16, Sun visor and vanity mirror, was checked "No", which I presume means that one or both were inoperable or missing. There was no estimate of the cost of repairs, including parts and labor. Those illuminated sun visors are expensive.
Good point. The sun visors are stupid expensive. Easy to think it's a simple, low cost fix, then you find out they are hundreds of dollars! Really.
I just got off the phone with the used sales manager and basically told him about my overall experience thus far and that I was ready to pull my deposit and shop elsewhere. I had complained about the lack of communication with the original salesman, delay in photos, the lack of initiative to get the basic inspection notes from the tech, the lack of completeness of the actual basic CPO inspection form, and the lack of knowledge and customer service that has been provided thus far. He basically jumped the gun on me and said... "now you think we are hiding things from you, and i completely understand". I will say that the manager was much more invested in the sale after i had complained to him. The manager is going to get the inspection re-done, ensure the form is complete, and have notes about recommended repairs, condition reports and provide tech notes. His goal was "to earn back the trust".
So after the conversation about the ridiculous "Jaguar Certified CPO report", he said "if there is anything that needs to get fixed or is recommended to be fixed, I will make sure it is done prior to delivery at no cost to you EX: He had sent me a text after the conversation. He had spoken to the service foreman and addressed the missing checks on the engine/ transmission mount. It does need attention and he texted me and said it will be taken care of... I am still a little skeptic about about it because If I never talked to the manager, i would have inherited that problem if I was to hasty in the purchase and, a 7 year old car with 40K miles on it is sure of have some issues. I am setting my expectation that some will be replaced/repaired, not all of it. In addition, the previous offer was at $46.7K and is dropping down to $45K flat out the door price (tax, tags, registration, doc fee, shipping). The new inspection, photos of the car, photos of the car on a lift and recommend repairs will all be delivered to me today for consideration of the sale. I will say that my experience was terrible up to that point, but it is headed in the right direction. Only time will tell.
Way better. We may yet see you here as the proud owner of an XKR-S!

Following on from Stuart's post re the visors, did I see the car has only one key? If so, either get the dealer to source and program a second key or get a discount of at least 500 bucks. The keys are expensive and you have to get them from Jaguar and programed by Jaguar. My car came with only one key and it cost the selling dealership about 700 bucks to source a replacement for me.
These cars are amazing value for money, and are cheap to buy for what you get. But if you had to rebuild the car with spare or replacement parts, it would cost you millions of dollars I think The missing visor (if it is missing) and the replacement key will easily run you a grand, so be sure it's all sorted before you finalise the sale.
Well??? Was the car purchased or not? What's the update??
I searched the VIN again and all the sales places state "not available", so it would appear it was sold. Don't know to WHOM though, but we could wager.
So the sales manager took it off the site since I put the deposit down. Apparently the dealership had technical issues can could not create the documents for me to sign. It is supposed to be over night shipped.
The undertray/belly pan is damaged, the visor will NOT be replaced, engine/transmission mount replaced. A second key is being ordered. All done before it gets sent out.
got more photos from the dealership. Interior looks good and exterior ain't too bad
What's the problem with the sun visor? Which side is it, driver's or passenger's? Did they send you a photo? Why won't they replace it? Labor cost to replace it is peanuts, but the part is expensive. Is it repairable? Maybe.
About a year ago, the driver's side sun visor on my 2013 XJ wouldn't stay up. I removed it and popped the illuminated mirror out (it simply snaps in) so I could identify the problem. The internals are all molded plastic, and the section that holds and rotates around the metal shaft had cracked and crumbled. As I recall, I paid around $400 for a new OEM Jaguar replacement without the Federally-mandated warning sticker. The identical part with that sticker was almost twice the price. I suspect that the X150 part is made the same way. A defective design. It took me less than 5 minutes to install the new sun visor.
I asked about it and this was the reply... "I have not received a quote to replace that as I cannot certify the vehicle and it doesn't effect the drivability of the car so I did not intend to replace it once I receive the quote I will answer if I can replace it"
Hard to believe the seller won't replace the visor. Doesn't make sense for a sale in this price range.
I imagine a dealer would have to use the visor with the federally-mandated sticker, so on the basis of Stuart's experience, this could run them 800 bucks. I guess that is digging a bit too deep into their margin, especially as they are already in for a spare key, and also gave a discount off the sticker price already.
If it's the passenger side, who cares? Driver side, well you probably need it, although a baseball cap works out cheaper (even an official Jaguar one)
Ridiculous..... $45,000 and quibbling over a sun visor? Be assured the dealer is still making money and probably senses he has a live one. I also would be looking for a credit or a replacement for the visor. If the dealer is giving you a hard time over the visor.... how will you feel approaching him for any other issues that might arise? Don’t let emotions get the best of you. Just my opinion....
You are all correct, I have been pushing for as many "fixes" as possible. One thing I will say is that the original asking price for the car was at $45K, but now it is down to $38,465. The biggest cost is the damn document fee. "*All prices plus sales tax, tag, and titling, and dealer service fee of $1499 which represents cost and profits to the selling dealer for items such as cleaning, inspecting, adjusting vehicles and preparing documents related to the sale." I already complained about it since day one when i started negotiations, but I guess that is firm, but then again everything is negotiable in a sale. The second is the enclosed transport of $1200. I have been searching everywhere for quotes and they are over $1200 for enclosed. When i spoke to the transport broker, they said that transports have been charging huge premiums because of the pandemic, so I think i am saving on transports by going through the dealer. Right there is already $2700, plus Tax and tags. But this has not stopped my from being as needy and particular for the sale haha. I will continue to push for it, I am sure that once they get close to sending the paperwork over and I complain about the visor (it is on the passenger side) I hope they will just say screw it and give it to me.
There might be some legal constraints in Florida about doc fees that require a dealer to treat all customers equally and charge them the same amount. Regardless, simply treat a doc fee as additional dealer markup and negotiate the best price you can including that fee. What matters to you is your net cost before tax, tag, title, and shipping and not how that net cost is determined.
