Engine oil cooler nightmare
Hey, Guys!
I bought a 2008 xk coupe on a whim, while in california. The exhaust note and rear end on this car really speaks to me.
Drove it back home to Las Vegas with a smile on my face… no problems whatsoever.
Two weeks in while doing maintenance work, I noticed the dreaded milkshake in the coolant expansion tank. Cleaned out the “ frot” and noticed some smaller black oil droppings floating around. Coolant level was good.
Car runs great, no codes, no limp mode and no white smoke from exhaust. Changed the engine oil, and no milkshake frot in engine oil or dip stick. This leads me to believe it could be the engine oil cooler. Done a ton of online searching, using chatgpt.
Problem. Due to time restraint, Ive been calling indie jag repair shops, but nobody can/ will do it. They cant get the parts needed.
The jag dealership quoted me close to $1000 for the oil cooler, AND since they didnt have the part in stock and quoted me approx a months time to get the parts, Im thinking of doing it myself.
PROBLEM. chatgpt gave me the gasket parts numbers needed, BUT these numbers are wrong. AJ810959 is the oil cooler I need. Also found that I could use a Ford part 6W83-6A642-AA.
But chatgpt tells me that I need a flat gasket between the engine block and oil housing Jaguar PN: AJ810960, but that is INCORRECT!
Chatgpt suggest a Core kit:
-AJ811889 (2x)
-AJ810960 (1x)
-AJ811888 (set)
I strongly believe these parts numbers are wrong!
I did find the o-ring looking like a black 8 PN: NCE1842AA….should go between the cooler and housing, if I understand it right.
Would love to hear from someone who has done this job on a 4.2 non supercharger, what parts are needed, tips and tricks tondo the job, and if it solved the milkshake problem.
Stressed out, but I’m ok

Oil cooler - RESOLVED. I replaced the Jag leaking oil cooler (on 2007 xk) with a ford "9C2Z6A642A Engine Oil Cooler 6.2 6.8L For 2008-2018 Ford Models Super Duty". It was identical in size and fittings, just needed to use the original Jag center bolt thru the cooler for proper thread. One minor modification was required on the cooler. The cooler's outer aluminum rim is notched for positioning the oil filter adapter, and the ford positioning is different than that for the Jag. However, it is easy to grind/file this ring to properly position the cooler on the adapter. Anyone needing an oil cooler should consider the ford as it is a small fraction of the cost of the Jag cooler.
reply with any questions and good luck.

Thanks for the links, kj07xk and Sean W! I did go through all posts regarding oil cooler on this forum, before posting myself. Very helpful and good info.
bill_jags, did you take the “whole” assembly apart? Housing and cooler?
Since I have a “hard” time finding the gasket that goes between the housing and block, I was wondering if it’s possible to just take off the cooler without taking off the housing, hence eliminating the need for that gasket.
From research, it’s the o-ring/gasket NCE1842AA or the inner core of the cooler that are the culprit for oil in coolant expansion tank.
I have ordered the gasket (NCE1842AA) that goes between the housing and the cooler. But having problem sourcing the gasket that goes between the oil filter housing and the block.
AJ811453-R has been suggested, but when I tried to order through eBay, I get a no match for my 2008 Xk 4.2 non supercharger.
what part/gasket did you use between the oil filter housing and block?
Congrats on doing this job with the Ford cooler👏👏👏
How is your Ford cooler holding up? How many miles have you put on it?
Any tips or tricks you have for me, I’m all ears. I am thinking of doing this with only the front raised.
Thanks, guys!

first, no problems since the installation, probably over a year ago and maybe 5000 miles. Side by side, you will see no difference between the parts, the exception being the rear ring positioning I mentioned in my post. Probably took about 5 minutes to file it correctly to match the jag one. I do not remember any difficulty in installing the new cooler except the bolt was very tight as I recall. I also do not recall any gasket or o ring issues, but my notes say I replaced the oil filter housing adapter seals at a cost of $14. The only difference was the center bolt thread, hence the need to reuse the original jag bolt. I believe I just did as you plan on doing, jack the front end and access it from underneith. I also recall just following the repair manual instructions, including draining down the coolant to prevent a mess. I also recall having some difficulty accessing one of the three bolts, but succeeded with just ordinary shop tools. I got to mine when I noticed oil below the car pretty quickly, and had minimal cross contamination of oil and coolant, yet I did renew the coolant and changed the oil.

Thank you very much, bill! Gives me more confidence to tackle this on my own.
The oil filter housing adapter seal ($14) you are mentioning, is that the black o-ring that looks like a figure 8 ( PN: NCE1842AA)?
You removed and reused the jag center bolt. Was there any o-rings on this bolt? If so, would you be able to find out the part number/s?
What kinda file did you use?
I called up my local Jag dealer parts department, but they couldn’t see a gasket between the housing and the block. Am I missing something?
Thanks for taking your time helping me out bill/guys.

it will be obvious when you get in to it. I don't recall any other details or issues that stood out. The positioning ring can be easily ground at the notch position, it is really soft aluminum. might have to remove maybe 1/8" or so depth, for perhaps 1 inch of the circle pattern. This does nothing seal wise. It just allows the cooler to be correctly positioned circularly to mate to the coolant hoses during assembly. May have used just a flat metal file or bench grinder, don't recall. The jag bolt may have an O ring. Nothing special about that, just inspect it and if stretched or aged any parts store will have it. I have an O ring assortment kit from harbor freight that has every size, so I just go to that when I need a ring. I also remember being confused by the manual on the water cooler hoses and a difference between two types that were used in the jags. However, since I did not replace it, it turned out to be a non-issue. The hose clamps are tricky. I used a standard hose clamps and did not reuse the originals.
My 2007 had 83000 on the meter when I bought it in January 2024. It ran great with no body or performance issues. In northern indiana we don't do much Jag driving in the winter (particularly the convertibles), and since I'm retired it was a nice winter project. I did about 10k worth of casual preventative maintenance over 3 months and used about $1800 in parts. This is my third Jag, started with an 87 xk6, then a 94 xjs 4.0 (which I still have) and then the xk, so I pretty much know my way around them. I did all the steering ball joints and tie rod ends, fluids and filters (including transmission which was the hardest), front and rear stabilizer bars, ariel (added one in the rear spoiler), detailing, TPMS module ( behind the seat in the 2+2), Tires, brake pads and rotors, headlamps (polish and condensation on one which I solved by blowing in compressed air for 30 minutes or so), one side view mirror (auto dimming fluid failure), battery and trickle charger, etc. I also bought it on a whim, listed at a local dealership. Good luck with yours, they are really fun cars that are incredible value bought used if you can do your own maintenance.
