Default Floor mat hooks

Both of the floor mat hooks on the drivers side have pulled out. The hooks themselves don't look damaged at all to me, it just looks like they came unsnapped. I've been contemplating pulling the seats and whatever to get the carpet out in order to put this back together. Anyone have any insight into this? Is it likely there is something broken under the carpet? Can they be reinstalled without major disassembly of the interior?

Why can't you simply glue them back in the same place without removing the carpet?

The plastic hooks are molded in 1 piece and have a "living" hinge which folds the 2 halves together (one above and one below the carpet) and a retaining snap. If your hooks are still complete i.e. not broken into 2 separate parts you may be able to fish the lower half back underneath the carpet and re-engage the snap. They should look similar to this Carpet hooks

Hafren, yes, the hooks look pretty much like those on your link.

I'm thinking now this is less complicated than I previously thought. For some reason I assumed they were somehow attached to the floor, but it appears that they only attach to the carpet itself.

Well, not so easy after all. There is a cavity under the carpet where the hooks go. So there is no support for the portion of the clip that is under the carpet and thus there is no way to push the 2 halves together.

Any interior disassembly tips? I got the sill partially pulled up easily as well as the kick panel, but neither came off completely and I was afraid to pull too hard and break something.

Looks like I will need a Torx socket (is that the right term?) to remove the seat.

OR, glue/tape/stick some velcro (posicro side, not neucro) to the bottom of the mat.

Default Don’t pull the carpet out

Same thing happened to me. I bought a can of foam insulation spray & sprayed a bit under the carpet & shoved the carpet hooks back in. Dries pretty quickly & wont give you a problem again. I found the long tube that comes with the can to be handy in getting enough material under the carpet to get proper adhesion. This is why I didn’t use glue. Just didn’t think I’d get enough under there to hold.

No need to disassemble anything to fit a new OE C2S39931 Carpet Retainer. There was one broken on my XK when I got the car.

Open the clip, slide it into the slot. The stiffness of the plastic naturally forces the end of the clip up through the second slot and it then simply presses together.

The only difficult part is paying for it. At 7 UKP it's a very expensive piece of plastic.

I wish that was my experience. Like I said in an earlier post, there is a cavity under where the clip goes, so there is no support to the bottom part of the clip to push the 2 halves together. Only thing I can think of is that maybe your experience was on the passenger side and that there is a difference in the floor? I have no idea if this is the case.

It was the driver's side (RH) on my RHD XK but that should make no difference.

Lifting the carpet will achieve nothing as the clip goes under the floor and on top of the carpet and there's no access from below.

1. open the new clip
2. insert the lower section throught the slot and push until the vertical tab on the end emerges through the other slot
3. hold the end with the vertical tab in position by inserting a flat blade screwdriver under it (the slot is wide enough to allow this)
4. snap the clip together
5. remove the screwdiver

It's taken me longer to write this than it did to fit the clip.

Thanks Graham. I did try exactly this already, but I will give it another go.
