Default FM Signal slowly disintegrating.

Hi all. Not much to the system I don't think and I haven't seen this particular issue with FM signal. It's slowly disintegrating and by that I mean it seems to move in an out of range as though I'm driving further from the tower. It happens on all stations, in town, when sitting still @ idle or driving. It started this spring and slowly getting worse. The antenna appears in tact and fully extends and the signal initially is strong once it does. After several seconds the signal just fades the comes back, etc....

I don't think my model has a splitter installed as I don't have a TMC. There's no Traffic Message Center module in North American cars.

So any troubleshooting ideas beyond the antenna cable itself? I will confirm both ends of the antenna cable are inserted fully. Could this just be the IAM slowly failing?

And thanks in advance to all who will let me know in advance they don't listen to radio:-) I still do, though not often.

Thanks for your help guys.

This might be a hard one to troubleshoot.......I'm thinking something like a broken connection (perhaps within a cable). Since the antenna on the 07 is a movable part that is where I would start. I've seen cables break a conductor intermittantly make/break contact, but that is speculative.
Is it possible to rig a temp external FM antenna that you can drive around with for a while to see if it experineces the same issue as a test?

How about the Radio Module in the boot?
Also I believe there is some sort of small device which the antenna cable to the rear spoiler hooks in. No idea what that is, but maybe something?

If you can access both ends of the cable, then I suggest you measure resistance of the center cable conductor from one end to the other, and also measure resistance of the ground shield from one end to the other. Wiggle the cable connectors while you are at it. See if the connector at the antenna has developed any corrosion from exposure to moisture.

Let's hope it is something simple like a bad/loose cable or connector.

This is eerily not too far off the mark...

Thanks guys. I will dive into it once the heat wave breaks. I hope it's something easy peazy like a loose connection and will check the obvious, but it happened so slowly over time, I thought I'd shout out to read if anyone else had the problem.
AM band is also fuzzy but unrelated to the TSB, this is just reception. I did upgrade my stereo from base to (Alpine) premium and later added the iPod upgrade via Cambo's/ JaHummer's great write ups but that was a long time ago and no issues until this spring.

I've got enough to feedback now to motivate me. Thanks!

Maybe the coaxial antenna cable in the rubber boot to the hatch is coming apart, from the movement, have heard of this happening.

FWIW, I noticed my AM band is completely gone. I am not picking up as many FM stations as I was in the most recent past. Gotta believe this is some type of antenna connection issue. I'll poke around as well and report any findings. Wondering how widespread this is? I have the 08 XKR which is a sharkfin type on the trunk (boot, to be proper).

I believe the shark fin is the satellite antenna and the am/fm one is in the spoiler. Sounds like an antenna connection problem.

Complete loss of AM is an internal fault with the head unit, fairly common problem, there was a bulletin for it, replacement head unit needed.

I had this happen on my Lincoln LS, the insulation between the shield and signal cable shrunk and they touched. Wala, minimal signal.

quite right. This is the FM band and all stations and as JT said, sounds like an antenna problem.

I did very little to address this over the weekend. I checked the connection @ the antenna and it's fine. It's bundled (wrapped) as a harness through the rear wall which is where I stopped. It's free and not chaffing against anything. Next week I'll take the radio out and check the connection there and maybe make a makeshift antenna extension off the cable if I can.

Thanks. There's no rubber boot though. This just feeds around the wall, not tightly either. It's not rubbing against anything up to the entry in the cabin.

Thanks Cambo. I'll explore replacing the head unit, but not having AM is probably not an issue. Mostly play on the FM band.
