Default hots for XK8 or R

Hi guys,
I'm new to the modern XK series Jags, but not new to the marque. So, my quandary, is coupe vs. cvt and from what year forward is a better choice? Higher mileage cars don't particularly scare me as the chance for many more "bugs" may have been overcome. I see where the body style changed in '07 (?) along with the folding "hide-a-away" top. Also, are the "certified" cars that much better, or, can one simply rely on CarFax? I'm thinking my budget won't allow me to venture past the '09-10" years.
Any comments will be helpful.

Default 2008 XKR Portfolio

I posted this on another forum, but its right on point for you. I add Rich's remarks, he is well know and respected on this forum. I have the same car as shown and I love the cream interior and blue paint.
Take a moment to read the car and driver report.
Jim

2008 Jaguar XKR Portfolio Edition - Car News - Car and Driver

If you haven't pulled the trigger yet, this car was $106,700 new. Its a 2008 XKR Portfolio with 18,000 miles. Only 138 2008 Portfolio convertiables shipped to the US. This one has the hand rubbed walnut dash. Celestial Black is has the blue flecs and looks black on a cloudy day but blue in sunlight and under artificial light. Google 2008 Portfolio XKR and read the Car and Driver and Dupont articles. You will fall in love. They want $46,000 but that is a fair price.

Jim:

Nice find with one owner and low mileage. When someone finds an XKR like this, you have to jump on it. This one won't last long. The dark Blue with the Beige interior has a real "rich" look. In addition, it looks like it has the Alcon brake system which was about a $5000 option. (Note the red calipers) Very nice find.

Carfax looks very clean with no reported problems at all:

If I wanted another XKR, this would be a great choice.

All the best,

More than just the body style changed with the 2007 model year - the new shape (X150) cars have an alloy body that makes them significantly lighter and quicker than the previous (X100) model, even though they had the same engine.

If you can stretch to the 2010 model year, with the the 5.0 engine, that's another significant upgrade. The 5.0 XK is nearly as quick as the 4.2 XKR.

IMHO the 5.0 engine is too sweet to pass up. Without a doubt the best thing Jaguar has come out with for decades.

They are asking $40K for that car, that is a real bargain with less than 20K miles, why hasn't anyone jumped on it???

It seems to have been serviced consistently by New River Auto Mall in Hardeeville, SC - could be worth giving their service department a call on 843 208-1258 and asking them what they can tell you about the car. They're not selling it, so they have no skin in the game.

I would go for a 2010+. In my opinion a much better vehicle all the way around. Note that I had a 2008 vert and now have a 2012.

The 2008 that has been discussed on now numerous threads may well be a desirable car due to its rarity, but at $46k, I'd rather have the 2010 XKR that I bought in Nov with 13k miles for $49k. Mine still has a mionth of standard warrantly and then another 2 yrs with the select warrantly. If you can swing a 2010+ that 510HP 5 L V8 is pretty intoxicating.

Upgrading to later model XKR or XKRS is certainly option for my next car.

Hey Guys,
Just to add to all of my Jag XK confusion, what years were the "Portfolios" produced?

The celestial black color of the portfolio under discussion sounds really nice, although I've never seen it. Sounds similiar to the BMS Black Saphire. When I was shopping for the 2010 XKR the 2010 BMW 650 was under consideration and I still would prefer that black saphire color to the ebony Jag that I bought.

Wiki says the Portfolio was introduced in 2007:

Default 2008 xkr portfolio

The portfolio was new for 2008. 255 shipped to the US, 138 convertibles i believe. All were spoken for before they were shipped.

Hi all,
I know that I appear to be "all over the map" when I ask ...about the "Sterling Moss Edition" that I ran across? I know they were "beat about" a couple of years ago, but, where they just a hyped up US dealer "thang"? One surfaced in my recent search for an "interesting" XJRs.

The "Sterling Moss Edition" was based on the X100 (4.2 steel-bodied) XKR. Apparently there were only 5 made, and I don't think they were an official Jaguar model, though Jaguar USA had some involvement:

I researched these cars pretty thoroughly, to the point of obtaining copies of the dyno runs from the shop that did them in Anaheim (think Disneyland--these cars are a fantasy all right).

I even have the name of the woman, Patricia Morrisette, Pre-Owned National Brand Manager, with Jaguar that was involved in having the work done. As Eurotoys said, they did nothing except put the Borla and K&N on and then did two dyno runs (I have copies). To get the phenominal HP and torque they claimed, the guy in the dyno shop used an absurd conversion factor that assumed a 29% power loss through the drive train. They were only getting 324.6 HP and 314.1 ft. lbs of torque at the rear wheels. If I used their conversion factor I must be getting over 500 hp at the flywheel!!!!! I don't think so.

These cars were a publicity stunt for display at the Vintage Race series that Jag was sponsoring some XKEs in. I think the power claims are nothing short of outright fraud.

I have to say, throughout my world wind search for a new Jag toy, it seems I'v run the gamut of series. That is, starting with the beginning of the new "XK" style to the current "edgy" look. I do like the very early look of the front end as, I guess, it looks more like my E-type. However, I love the new technology and how the power plant has morphed over the years.
I'm not much on the "gimmicky" versions, but, do take a shine to the Portfolio series.
Happy Trails today......
